Chapter 1

The Fishbowl

The call came at 4:00 PM, just as the golden hour was beginning to bake the smog over Los Angeles into a hazy, dreamlike amber.
Lila Rose stood on the edge of the infinity pool, her phone pressed so hard against her ear that the screen was hot against her skin. She wasn't looking at the view—a sprawling grid of millions of people who thought they knew her name. She was looking at her reflection in the glass wall of the living room.
"They want you, Lila," her agent’s voice crackled, breathless with the commission she was about to make. "It’s a firm offer. No chemistry read. No network approval. You are the lead in *Severance*."
Lila stopped breathing for a second. *Severance*. It wasn't just a movie; it was *the* movie. A gritty, A24-style drama about addiction and betrayal. No pigtails. No laugh tracks. No catchphrases she had been repeating since she was six years old on the Disney Channel.
"Are you sure?" Lila whispered, her voice trembling. "They know I'm... me? The girl from *Lollipop Lane*?"
"They know you’re a powerhouse, kid. Filming starts in two weeks. Get ready. Your life is about to change."
Lila hung up. A scream of pure, unadulterated joy ripped from her throat. She jumped, her bare feet slapping against the warm concrete of the patio. She had done it. She had finally crossed the bridge from "cute kid" to "serious actress."
She spun around, desperate to share the feeling.
"Caden! Caden, did you hear?"
The glass door slid open. Caden Vance stepped out. He was shirtless, wearing low-slung basketball shorts, a towel draped around his neck. He looked like exactly what he was: the high school quarterback who had followed his girlfriend to the big city. He was broad-shouldered, tan, with the kind of corn-fed, American good looks that made casting directors stop and stare, until they realized he had zero interest in being in front of a camera.
He had been in the gym—the converted garage—lifting weights. He always lifted when he was stressed.
"Hear what?" Caden asked. He grabbed a bottle of water from the patio table, unscrewing the cap with a sharp twist.
"I got it," Lila beamed, rushing over to him. She wrapped her arms around his damp waist, burying her face in his chest. "I got *Severance*. I’m going to be the lead!"
She waited for the squeeze. She waited for him to lift her up and spin her around, like he did when she got her driver’s license, or when they found this house.
But Caden didn't move. His muscles were rigid under her touch.
"That's the one with the shower scenes, right?" he asked.
Lila pulled back, her smile faltering. "It’s a drama, Caden. It’s art. And yeah, there’s nudity, but it’s tasteful. It’s essential to the character’s vulnerability."
Caden took a long drink of water. He stared out at the city, his jaw working. "And the co-star? That British guy? The one who dates models?"
"Julian?" Lila shrugged. "Yeah. He’s attached."
Caden finally looked at her. His eyes, usually a warm, inviting brown, were flat. Dark.
"You really think they cast you for your acting, Li?"
The air went out of Lila’s lungs. "What?"
"Come on," Caden scoffed. He reached out and tucked a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. The gesture was gentle, but his fingers lingered on her neck a second too long. "You’re cute. You’re famous. And this director... I looked him up. He has a type. Blonde. Young. Naive."
"That’s not fair," Lila stepped back, hurt blooming in her chest. "I auditioned three times. I worked my ass off."
"I know you did, baby," Caden said soothingly. He stepped forward, closing the distance she had tried to create. He wrapped his arms around her, trapping her against his body. "I’m just being real with you. These people... they don't see you like I do. They see a piece of meat. They see a ticket sale."
He kissed the top of her head. "I just don't want you to be disappointed when he tries to get you into his trailer."
Lila stood frozen in his embrace. The joy of the phone call had evaporated, replaced by a cold, slimy feeling of shame. Maybe he was right. Caden was the only one who knew her before the fame. He was the only one who didn't want anything from her—except her.
"I can handle myself," Lila whispered into his chest.
"I know," Caden tightened his grip, squeezing her until her ribs ached. "Because you have me. I’m the only one who actually protects you, Lila. Don't ever forget that."
