Chapter 3
The Variable
❧
It was 3:00 AM. The train was still stopped.
The silence in the Observation Car felt heavy, charged with something Felix couldn't quantify. The only sound was the scratching of Chloe’s pencil against the paper.
"Done," she murmured.
She didn't show him the drawing. She set the book down on the small table between them.
She leaned forward. Felix mirrored her, drawn in by a gravity he couldn't fight.
"Felix," she said. Her voice was barely a whisper. "You calculate everything. You have a plan for everything."
"I try," he croaked.
"So," she looked at his lips, then up to his eyes. "What are the odds?"
"The odds of what?"
"Of us," Chloe said. "Of you and me. Ending up together."
Felix’s brain short-circuited.
He tried to run the numbers. He tried to think about friendship retention rates versus romantic risk factors. He tried to think about the itinerary.
But all he could think about was how close she was. He could count the freckles on her nose.
"I..." Felix started. "The data is... insufficient. I would need to run a field test."
Chloe laughed, a breathless sound. "A field test?"
"Yeah."
"Okay," she whispered. "Test it."
She leaned in.
Felix abandoned the script. He abandoned the safety of the plan. He leaned in too. His heart was hammering a rhythm that was medically concerning. He closed his eyes. He felt the warmth of her breath.
*CLANG-JOLT.*
The train lurched forward with the violence of a cannon shot.
Felix was thrown back into his chair. Chloe grabbed the table to steady herself.
The overhead lights flickered, buzzed, and then slammed on—blinding, sterile, fluorescent white.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" the conductor announced cheerfully over the intercom, shattering the mood like glass. "We are back in business! Full speed ahead to D.C.!"
Felix blinked, shielding his eyes against the sudden glare. The starlight was gone, replaced by the reflection of his own shocked face in the window.
Chloe was sitting back in her chair. She looked disheveled, her eyes wide. The moment—the delicate, uncalculated bubble—had popped.
"Oh," Chloe said. She picked up her sketchbook, clutching it to her chest. "We're moving."
"Yeah," Felix said, his voice hollow. "We're moving."
