The Break

Saturday morning, the black limousine pulled up to the pier.
Admiral Sterling (retired, but he never let anyone forget the title) stepped out. He was a tall man made of granite and disappointment.
Isla was on the dock, handing Leo the final invoice.
"Leo," Mr. Sterling barked. "Why is the tender scratched?"
Leo flinched. "I... I hit a pylon, sir. But it’s fixed."
Mr. Sterling looked at Isla. He looked at her grease-stained coveralls. He looked at the way Leo was standing—protectively close to her.
"And who is this?" Mr. Sterling sneered. "The help?"
"She’s the mechanic, Dad. She fixed the Osprey."
"I told you to take it to the marina in Portland," Sterling snapped. "Not some townie chop shop." He turned to Isla. "How much?"
"Two thousand for parts and labor," Isla said, lifting her chin.
Sterling laughed. He pulled out a checkbook. "I’ll give you five hundred. And another five hundred to stay away from my son until we ship out. I know how you locals operate. Looking for a golden ticket out of the trailer park."
Isla felt the heat rise in her cheeks. She looked at Leo. She waited for him to speak. To say, *She’s brilliant. She’s going to be an engineer. She’s not trash.*
Leo opened his mouth. He looked at his father. His jaw worked. But the lifetime of conditioning held him by the throat. He looked down at the deck.
"Just pay her, Dad," Leo muttered.
The silence that followed was louder than the waves slapping the pilings.
Isla felt something inside her chest snap. The Tether, maybe.
She snatched the check from Sterling’s hand.
"Keep your money," she said, ripping the check in half and letting the pieces flutter into the harbor water. "And keep your son. He’s hollow anyway."
She turned and walked away.
Leo shouted her name. "Isla!"
She didn't turn back. She walked straight into her shop, locked the door, and slid down to the floor, burying her face in her hands.
