Chapter 4
The Storm
❧
The storm hit on a Thursday evening. It was a New England nor'easter, shaking the old stone walls of the university.
Arthur and Lily were in the lower vault, the deepest part of the Archives, cataloging a donation of Civil War letters.
*BOOM.*
Thunder shook the floor. Then, darkness.
The lights cut out. The hum of the ventilation system died.
"Eep!" Lily squeaked.
"Stay calm," Arthur’s voice came from the dark. "It’s just a power outage. The emergency lights should..."
A dim, amber glow flickered on near the door.
"Okay," Lily exhaled. "Let's go."
They walked to the heavy steel door. Arthur swiped his badge.
*Beep-beep-beep.* Red light.
He tried again. *Beep-beep-beep.*
"The electronic locks," Arthur groaned. "They default to 'sealed' when the main grid fails. It’s a security measure."
"So we're trapped?" Lily asked, her voice rising.
"Until the power returns. Or until security does a manual sweep."
"How long does that take?"
"Given the storm... possibly morning."
Lily slid down the wall and sat on the floor. "Great. A sleepover in the dungeon."
Arthur took off his jacket. He folded it neatly and placed it on the floor next to her. "Sit on this. The concrete is cold."
"Thanks, Artie," she whispered. He didn't correct her this time.
He sat next to her, loosening his tie completely. He undid the top button of his shirt.
In the dim amber light, the silence wasn't heavy. It was intimate.
"So," Lily said, hugging her knees. "Since we're trapped. 20 Questions?"
"That seems... juvenile."
"I'll start. What is your biggest fear?"
Arthur looked at the ceiling. "Irrelevance," he said honestly. "Being forgotten. Like one of those books nobody ever checks out. You?"
"Being a fraud," Lily said. She picked at a loose thread on her jeans. "I feel like a kid playing dress-up in grad school. Everyone else is so smart and serious. And I'm just... silly. I make jokes because I'm scared if I stop laughing, people will realize I'm stupid."
Arthur turned to her. He reached out and covered her hand with his.
"You are not stupid, Lily," he said fiercely. "You are brilliant. You see connections others miss. Your 'vibes' system? I checked it. It was remarkably intuitive. You group history by emotion, not just chronology. It’s human. It’s... wonderful."
Lily looked up at him, tears in her eyes. "You think I'm wonderful?"
"I think you are the most vibrant thing that has ever happened to this university," Arthur said. "And to me."
The air shifted. The distance between them, usually measured in years and degrees, vanished.
Lily leaned in. "Arthur?"
"Yes?"
"I really want to kiss you."
Arthur looked at her. He saw the trust in her eyes. He saw the girl who brought him salmon and boba tea.
"It would be highly inappropriate," Arthur whispered, leaning in.
"I know," Lily whispered back.
Their lips were an inch apart. Arthur could feel her breath. He closed his eyes, surrendering.
*BZZZZZT.*
The overhead lights slammed on with the force of a supernova. The ventilation system roared to life.
They jumped apart as if burned.
The heavy steel door hissed open. A security guard poked his head in.
"Dr. Penhaligon? Power's back. You folks okay?"
Arthur stood up, buttoning his collar with trembling fingers. His face was pale. The mask was back on.
"We are fine," Arthur said, his voice tight. "Thank you, Frank."
He didn't look at Lily. "Go home, Miss Chen. Drive safely."
