Chapter 3

The Discord

The bubble popped three days later.
They were rehearsing in one of the practice rooms at Highmore. Elena had snuck him in after hours, claiming the acoustics on the roof were getting drowned out by a construction crew.
The room was beautiful. Steinway piano, soundproofed walls, polished floors. Kai felt like an intruder. He kept checking the door, expecting security to drag him out.
They were in the middle of a complex run, their eyes locked, smiling, when the door swung open.
"Elena?"
The music died instantly.
Standing in the doorway was a tall man in a charcoal suit. He had Elena’s eyes, but without the warmth. Dean Vance.
Elena froze. Her hands hovered over the keys, trembling.
"Father," she whispered.
Dean Vance walked into the room. He didn't look at Elena. He looked at Kai. He looked at the scuffed boots, the frayed coat, the taped-up violin. His gaze was physical, a weight that pressed Kai into the floor.
"I was told there was an unauthorized student in Practice Room B," Dean Vance said. His voice was smooth, cultured, and dripping with disdain. "I didn't realize we were running a shelter."
Kai stiffened. His grip on his bow tightened.
"He's not a stray," Elena said, though her voice was small. "He's... my partner. For the improvisation piece."
Dean Vance laughed. It was a dry, humorless sound. "Partner? Elena, darling, you are a classical pianist. This boy is a street rat. You can smell the subway on him."
"He's talented," Elena tried again.
"He is corrupting your training," Vance snapped. "Improvisation is one thing. This... noise... is another. You have a future, Elena. Julliard. The symphony. Do not throw it away for a teenage rebellion."
He turned his cold eyes to Kai. "Get out. If I see you on this campus again, I will have you arrested for trespassing."
Kai looked at Elena. He waited. He waited for her to stand up. He waited for her to scream, to tell her father that Kai was better than half the stiff-necked students in this building.
Elena looked down at her hands. She said nothing. The fear of her father, the years of conditioning, paralyzed her.
The silence stretched, agonizing and absolute.
Kai felt his heart harden. It was a familiar sensation. The armor going back up.
"Don't worry," Kai said, his voice deadly calm. "I know when I'm not wanted."
He packed his violin with deliberate slowness. He slung the case over his shoulder.
"Kai, wait," Elena whispered as he walked to the door.
Kai didn't look back. "Good luck with Julliard, Elena."
He walked out into the cold night. He took the L-train back to his neighborhood. When he got to his apartment, he saw the landlord taping a new paper to his door.
*EVICTION NOTICE. 48 HOURS TO VACATE.*
Kai rested his forehead against the peeling paint of the door. The hope that had bloomed on the rooftop withered and died, leaving only the cold reality of survival.
