Chapter 4
The Blizzard Calculation
❧
The day before the planned stunt, the weather forecast turned apocalyptic. A polar vortex was descending on Blackwell. Temperatures were plummeting, and wind speeds were predicted to hit forty miles per hour.
Oliver sat in the Quantum Lab, running the final simulation.
He entered the variables. Wind speed: 40 mph. Temperature: -10 degrees. Friction coefficient of frozen limestone.
The computer ran the model.
**Result: Catastrophic Failure. Probability of Survival: 4.2%.**
Oliver stared at the screen. He felt sick.
The door opened. Bex walked in. She looked tired, but determined.
"Don't say it," she said.
"I have to say it," Oliver spun his chair around. "Look at the screen, Bex. Four percent. You have a four percent chance of surviving that drop in these conditions."
"I can handle the wind," Bex said, crossing her arms. "I've trained for it."
"Not this wind!" Oliver shouted, standing up. "It’s a blizzard! The silk will freeze. The stone will be iced over. You won't be able to grip. You will die."
"I have to do it tomorrow," Bex said stubbornly. "It’s the seniors' last day before thesis review. If I don't do it, I fail the semester."
"Then fail!" Oliver pleaded. "Fail the semester, Bex! Don't fail at staying alive!"
"You don't get it," she stepped closer, her eyes blazing. "This isn't just a grade. This is about proving I can do something real. Something that matters."
"It doesn't matter if you're a smear on the pavement!"
"You calculate the life out of everything, Ollie," she said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You're so scared of losing that you never actually play the game. I’d rather die trying to fly than live in a basement staring at a whiteboard."
She grabbed the schematics off his desk.
"I'm doing it," she said. "With or without your permission."
"Bex, wait—"
She was gone. The grate rattled as she slammed the door.
Oliver stood in the silence of the lab. The numbers on the screen mocked him. *4.2%.*
