Chapter 4

The Improvised Burn

The midpoint of the filming schedule was the "Confrontation at the Obsidian Spire."
It was a massive scene. Malakor (Sebastian) was supposed to capture the Village Maiden and threaten to burn her village unless the Golden Knight (Chad) surrendered.
The problem was, the extra playing the Village Maiden had food poisoning.
"Penny, you're the right size," the Director yelled. "Get in costume. We need a body."
Twenty minutes later, Penny was dressed in a peasant blouse, kneeling on the cold stone floor of the soundstage. Her hands were tied with prop rope.
Sebastian loomed over her. He was back in his black velvet and leather armor. He looked terrifying.
"Action!"
Sebastian grabbed Penny’s chin. He tilted her face up to the light.
According to the script, he was supposed to say: *Your hero cannot save you. The darkness consumes all.*
But Sebastian looked at Penny. He looked at her wide, brown eyes. He looked at the girl who had bought him an oatmeal sweater and taught him how to say hello to the makeup artist.
He forgot his line.
He forgot Malakor.
He stayed in the moment, but the emotion shifted. It wasn't hate. It was obsession.
"Do you know why I hate the light?" Sebastian improvised, his voice dropping to a whisper that the boom mics barely caught.
The Director didn't cut. The set went silent.
"Why?" Penny whispered back, genuinely caught in his gaze.
"Because the dark just hides you," Sebastian said, running his thumb over her cheekbone. "But the light... the light burns. It exposes everything. And looking at you... I am burning."
He looked at her with such raw, hungry intensity that the camera operators forgot to breathe. It wasn't the look of a villain wanting to kill a victim. It was the look of a man realizing he was in love.
"Cut!" the Director yelled. "My god! That was electric! Sebastian, that was genius! The sexual tension! The menace! Perfect!"
Sebastian snapped out of it. He dropped his hand. He looked around, dazed.
He looked at Penny. She was breathless, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"That wasn't in the script," she whispered.
"No," Sebastian said, his voice shaky. "It wasn't."
He helped her up. He didn't let go of her hand immediately.
"Penny," he said. "I think... I think the rebranding is working. I don't feel like a villain anymore."
"What do you feel like?" she asked.
"Like a man who wants to change the ending," he said.
