The Dead Zone

The drive took four hours. Elara drifted in and out of consciousness, the adrenaline crash combining with the withdrawal from whatever Marcus had been feeding her.
When the van stopped, the silence was absolute.
The side door slid open. The desert air hit her—cold, dry, and smelling of sagebrush.
"Out," the man said.
Elara stepped out. Her diamond dress shimmered absurdly under the vast, indifferent Milky Way. They were in the middle of nowhere. Massive red rocks rose around them, hiding a brutalist concrete structure that looked half-buried in the earth.
"Where are we?" Elara asked, hugging herself against the cold.
"Mojave," the man said. "My house. No signal. No satellite. No Marcus."
He led her inside. It wasn't a dungeon. It was a bunker, yes, but the main room was lined with books, analog synthesizers, and whirring server racks cooled by massive industrial fans. It was dusty, cluttered, and lived-in.
He pointed to a door. "That’s your room. There’s a lock. You lock it from the inside. I don't have a key."
Elara stared at him. "You're a kidnapper who respects privacy?"
"I'm not a kidnapper," he said, walking over to a bank of monitors. He began typing furiously. "I'm Glitch."
Elara froze. *Glitch.* The hacker collective. The digital terrorist who had leaked the Senate emails last year.
"You want ransom," she said, her voice shaking. "Marcus won't pay. He’ll just claim the insurance."
Kael "Glitch" Riker stopped typing. He spun his chair around. He looked at her with a cynicism that felt older than his face.
"I don't want his money," Kael said. "I want his head on a spike."
He pulled up a file on the main screen. It was a medical report. *Subject: Elara Vance.*
"Look at the date," Kael commanded.
Elara stepped closer, her heels clicking on the concrete. The date was tomorrow.
"It says... Acute Psychotic Break," Elara read. "Recommended immediate conservation."
"He wrote the report three days ago," Kael said. "He was just waiting for the gala to stage the breakdown. If I hadn't cut the power, you would be sedated in a white room right now, and he would have control of your four-hundred-million-dollar estate."
Elara felt the room spin. "You're lying. You faked this."
"I hacked his cloud," Kael said. "I hacked his emails. I hacked his pharmacy records." He stood up, towering over her. "You're not crazy, Elara. You're being poisoned. The 'vitamins' he gives you? Benzodiazepines and a low-grade hallucinogen. Just enough to make you pliable. Just enough to make you fail a psych eval."
"No," Elara whispered, backing away. "He's... he's family."
"He's a parasite," Kael said. "And I'm the antibiotic."
He turned back to the screens. "Go to sleep. The door locks, remember? If you want to run, the desert is fifty miles in every direction. Coyotes eat pretty things out here."
Elara went into the room. She locked the door. She slid down to the floor, her diamond dress pooling around her like broken glass, and waited for the morning.
