Chapter 4
The Kill Switch
❧
By day five, the bunker felt less like a prison and more like a sanctuary.
Elara wore one of Kael’s oversized flannel shirts. She helped him organize the server cables. She learned that he liked his coffee black and that he listened to classical music when he hacked because lyrics distracted him.
They were on the roof of the bunker. It was midnight. The desert sky was a bruised purple, littered with a billion stars.
"I've never seen them like this," Elara said, lying back on the concrete. "In LA, the sky is orange."
"Light pollution," Kael said, lying next to her. "Fake light drowning out the real light."
"Is that a metaphor?" Elara teased.
"Maybe." Kael turned his head to look at her. "You look better. The fog is gone."
"I feel better," Elara admitted. She turned to face him. They were inches apart. "I feel... awake."
"That's the danger of freedom," Kael murmured. "Once you wake up, you can't go back to sleep."
"I don't want to go back," Elara said. "I don't want to be the doll anymore. I want to burn the factory down."
Kael’s eyes searched hers. "We can do that. I have the financial records. But it's not enough to put him away for life. We need the smoking gun."
"The medical tampering," Elara realized.
"I need the raw data from his private server," Kael said. "I've been brute-forcing the encryption for days. It’s tough."
"You can do it," Elara said. She reached out and touched his hand. His fingers were calloused, rough. "You're Glitch. You can do anything."
Kael looked at her hand on his. He laced his fingers through hers.
"Elara," he whispered. "I didn't kidnap you to keep you."
"I know," she said.
"But I really don't want to let you go."
He leaned in. Elara met him halfway.
The kiss wasn't like the staged romances she performed for music videos. It tasted of desert dust and coffee and desperation. It was messy and real. Kael kissed her like she was a revelation, not an asset.
When they pulled apart, breathless, a beep echoed from the bunker below.
"The server," Kael said, his eyes widening. "I'm in."
They scrambled down the ladder.
The main screen was scrolling green text. Kael typed a command. A folder opened.
**PROJECT: PUPPET MASTER.**
It was all there. Emails to a shady doctor. Receipts for the hallucinogens. A detailed timeline of increasing dosages meant to induce permanent cognitive decline.
"He was killing me," Elara whispered, reading the screen. "Slowly. He was erasing my mind."
"This is it," Kael said, copying the files to a reinforced hard drive. "This is the kill switch. With this, he goes to prison for attempted murder."
He handed her the drive.
"We leave at dawn," Kael said. "We take this to the FBI."
Suddenly, a red light flashed on his perimeter monitor.
**MOTION DETECTED. SECTOR 4.**
Kael froze. He tapped a key, bringing up a grainy night-vision feed.
Three black SUVs were tearing across the desert floor, kicking up plumes of dust. They were moving fast, tactical formation.
"Mercenaries," Kael cursed. "He tracked the signal when the encryption broke. I was careless."
He looked at Elara. The softness was gone from his face, replaced by the soldier.
"They're here to kill us," Elara said, panic rising.
"No," Kael said. "They're here to kill *me* and retrieve *you*. You're the asset. I'm the liability."
