Chapter 3

The Viral Strain

The explosion happened at breakfast on Saturday.
Chloe walked into the dining hall, carrying her tray of oatmeal. Usually, the cafeteria noise was a dull roar. Today, as she crossed the threshold, the room went silent.
Then, the whispering started. A hiss of gossip that spread like wildfire.
She kept her head down, walking toward her usual empty table. She felt eyes on her. Not the indifferent glances she was used to, but sharp, predatory stares.
"That's her," a girl whispered loudly. "The predator."
"Disgusting," a guy laughed. "She looks so innocent, too."
Chloe froze. She set her tray down, her hands shaking.
"Vance!"
It was Brett, Liam’s backup goalie. A guy who had spent three years sitting on the bench, resenting every save Liam made. He was holding his phone up, a smirk twisted across his face.
"Nice technique, Vance," Brett shouted. "Is that part of the standard rehab protocol?"
He turned the phone screen toward her.
Chloe’s blood turned to ice.
It was a photo. Taken through the crack in the blinds. It was grainy and dark, but the subjects were unmistakable.
It showed Liam sitting on the table, shirtless, his legs spread. And it showed Chloe standing between them, her hands on his upper thighs, leaning in close.
It was taken seconds before the kiss. But without context, it didn't look like medical massage. It looked sexual. And because Liam looked vulnerable—head back, eyes closed in pain/relief—and Chloe was the one in the position of power...
"Checking his prostate, Vance?" Brett jeered. "Or just helping him relax?"
The cafeteria erupted in laughter.
Chloe grabbed her bag and ran. She didn't look for Liam. She couldn't bear to see if he was laughing too.
She ran straight into the arms of the Headmaster.
Headmaster Sterling (no relation, though he wished he was) stood in the doorway, his face purple with rage.
"Miss Vance," he barked. "My office. Now."
The next hour was a blur of bureaucratic nightmare.
"Unprofessional conduct," the Headmaster spat, sliding the printed photo across his mahogany desk. "Predatory behavior toward a student athlete. Moral turpitude."
"I was treating a groin strain!" Chloe argued, tears streaming down her face. "He was hurt! He asked me not to tell anyone!"
"So you admit you were treating him secretly? Behind closed doors? At midnight?"
"Yes, but—"
"Liam is the face of this school," the Headmaster said coldly. "He is a victim here. You took advantage of his injury to initiate a sexual encounter."
"I didn't! We kissed, but that was it! It was mutual!"
"Mutual?" The Headmaster scoffed. "He is an NHL prospect. You are a scholarship student. There is a power dynamic here, Miss Vance, and you abused it."
The door opened.
Liam walked in. He was wearing his team tracksuit. He looked pale, dark circles under his eyes. His parents were behind him, along with a man in a sharp suit—his agent.
"Liam," Chloe breathed. "Tell him. Tell him I was helping you."
Liam looked at her. His eyes were tortured.
The agent stepped forward. "My client has no comment at this time. He was seeking medical attention and felt... pressured."
Chloe gasped. It felt like a physical blow to the chest.
"Liam?" she whispered.
Liam didn't look at her. He looked at the floor. His hands were clenched into fists at his sides.
"Suspension," the Headmaster announced. "Effective immediately. Miss Vance, you are banned from the athletic facilities. You are banned from the Championship game. You will pack your things. We will review your scholarship status on Monday."
"Liam!" Chloe screamed, a raw sound of betrayal.
Liam flinched, but he didn't speak. He stood like a statue, the Wall once again, protecting himself by shutting out the world.
