The Seer’s Journal

The fire in the gas hearth flickered, casting long, dancing shadows against the rain-slicked windows. The storm had intensified, erasing the world outside until only the reflection of the room remained.
Simon sat in the Eames chair, the black book open on his lap. Caleb sat on the rug, hugging his knees.
"It’s a diary," Simon said, his voice dropping to a theatrical hush. "Belonged to a man named Elias Thorne. Lived in a cabin on this ridge in the 1920s. Locals called him a Seer."
"Spooky," Caleb said, trying to keep his tone light. "Does he give stock tips?"
"He gives warnings." Simon flipped a page. "Listen to this. The entry is dated October 14th."
Caleb froze. "That’s today."
"Coincidence," Simon said, though his eyes gleamed. He began to read. *"The storm brings the strangers to the edge of the world. One is the Guide, strong and clear. The other is the Broken One, marked by the iron kiss on his right hand."*
Simon looked up, his gaze dropping to Caleb’s scarred hand.
Caleb laughed, a nervous, dry sound. "Okay, very funny. You had that printed up before we left Seattle. Good joke."
"I found it on the shelf, Caleb. Listen." Simon continued reading. *"The Broken One shall not leave this ridge. His debt is due. Three Omens shall herald his end. First, the Winged Messenger shall strike the invisible wall. Second, the Hearth shall bite the hand that feeds it. Third, the Betrayal shall spill the blood."*
Simon closed the book with a soft *thud*.
The silence in the room was heavy.
"It’s a gag," Caleb said, standing up. His legs felt shaky. "It’s a prop left by the Airbnb host to freak out tourists. 'The iron kiss'? Come on."
"Probably," Simon agreed, placing the book on the coffee table. "But it is specific, isn't it? The date. The storm. The hand."
"I'm going to bed," Caleb said. He needed to get away from Simon’s staring eyes.
"Sleep well," Simon called after him. "Don't let the ghosts bite."
