The Kiss

The scan stalled at 45%.
Panic flared in Elena’s chest, hot and sharp, but she smothered it. If she ran now, security would have her in a holding cell before the elevator hit the eightieth floor. She had to play the hand.
"You knew I was coming," she stated, dropping the affectation.
"I hoped," Julian corrected. He gestured toward the terrace doors. "Shall we? The air inside is getting stale."
He didn't wait for an answer. He walked out onto the Aether Deck, into the wind and the drizzle. Elena followed, her mind racing. He hadn't called security. He hadn't raised his voice. That meant he wanted something.
Outside, the noise of the city was a dull roar. The rain slicked the black marble floor, reflecting the neon bleed of the skyline. Julian walked to the edge, looking down at the drop.
"It’s been five years," Julian said, his back to her. "Since the incident with your sister. How is she? Still... resting?"
The cruelty was surgical. Elena felt her fingernails bite into her palms. "She's waiting. For you to pay for the neuro-tech that fried her brain."
"Progress requires sacrifice," Julian said, turning around. The wind tore at his tuxedo jacket, but he looked perfectly composed. "You're here for the encryption key. My retinal pattern. You think if you get into the server, you can find the clinical trial data and send me to prison."
"I don't think," Elena said, stepping closer. *Scanning... 50%.* "I know."
She needed to keep him still. She needed his eyes wide open.
"You were always ambitious," Julian murmured. He looked at her with a strange mix of pity and hunger. "But you never understood the scale of the game."
Elena closed the distance. She reached up, her fingers grazing the lapel of his jacket. It was a calculated risk. If he recoiled, the gig was up. If he leaned in, she could finish the scan.
"Maybe I just missed you, Julian," she lied.
She pulled him down. It wasn't a romantic gesture; it was a tactical assault. She pressed her lips to his, tilting her head to align the contact lens perfectly with his left eye.
Julian didn't pull away. He kissed her back, cold and firm, his hands resting lightly on her waist.
* Scanning... 80%... 90%...*
The proximity was suffocating. She could smell the expensive scotch on his breath and the faint, metallic tang of the rain. He felt like a statue, cold marble masquerading as a man.
* Scanning... 100%. Uploading.*
Elena broke the kiss, breathless, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had it. She stepped back, ready to deliver a parting line and disappear into the night.
But Julian was smiling. It wasn't a smile of affection. It was the smile of a predator who had just heard the trap snap shut.
