Chapter 4
The Descent
❧
The silence on the terrace was shattered by the vibration of Elena’s own phone. Then again. And again. Not messages—alerts.
"Run, Elena," Julian said, sipping his drink. "The elevator is the only way down. It takes forty-five seconds to reach the lobby. I’d use them wisely."
Elena didn't waste a second on a retort. She turned and sprinted for the glass doors, her heels clicking sharply on the marble. She burst into the lobby, ignoring the stares of the gala guests, and slammed her hand against the elevator call button.
The doors slid open instantly. She threw herself inside the glass box and hit the button for the ground floor.
As the doors closed, she saw Julian standing on the other side of the lounge, watching her through the layers of glass and rain. He raised his glass one last time.
The elevator dropped.
Gravity lurched in her stomach. The city blurred into vertical streaks of light outside the glass walls. Ninety floors. Eighty. Seventy.
Elena ripped the contact lens out of her eye and crushed it under her heel, but she knew it was too late. The tag was digital; it was tied to her biometric signature now.
She pulled out her phone. The screen was flooded with notifications from the dark web channels she monitored.

"Damn it," she breathed, watching the floor numbers plummet. Forty. Thirty.
She looked out at the city. It wasn't just a skyline anymore; it was a hunting ground. Below, amidst the traffic and the rain, she saw shadows moving. Black SUVs peeling out of alleyways. Drones detaching from rooftops.
The elevator slowed as it approached the lobby. Ten. Five. Ground.
The ding of the elevator arrival sounded like a funeral bell.
The doors slid open. The air in the lobby was cold, mixing with the damp draft from the revolving doors. The street outside was chaos—horns blaring, rain lashing the pavement, and a sea of strangers in dark coats.
Elena stepped out. She checked the pistol in her clutch, chambered a round, and pulled her coat collar up. She looked up one last time, toward the invisible peak of the tower buried in the clouds.
She was burnt, tagged, and hunted. But she was on the ground now.
Elena holstered the gun and stepped into the rain, disappearing into the electric shark tank, ready to bite back.
