Chapter 3

The Arrangement

He didn't look frightening. He didn't have a weapon. He was wearing a cashmere sweater and holding a tumbler of amber liquid. He looked like a man enjoying a quiet evening at home. That was what made him terrifying.
"I thought I was quite clear, Ms. Vance," Julian said. His voice was smooth, carrying effortlessly over the sound of the rain battering the roof.
Elara froze. The legal papers crumpled in her fist. "She's in there. She's alive."
Julian took a sip of his drink. "For the moment. Tonight marks the end of a very long, very profitable fiscal quarter. My wife understands her role. She was the bridge to a merger. The bridge has been crossed. Maintenance is no longer required."
"You're going to kill her," Elara breathed.
"I'm going to let nature take its course. A tragic fall. A confused woman wandering in the dark. The storm provides excellent cover." He took a step forward. "But you, Elara. You present a variable I hadn't accounted for. Curiosity."
He stopped five feet away. The smell of his cologne was suffocating.
"I can offer you a new arrangement," Julian said, reaching into his pocket. He pulled out a money clip. "There is twenty thousand dollars here. Cash. Plus the check. You go back to the nursery. You put on your headphones. You sleep. In the morning, you take Leo, and you leave. You will never have to work again. You can fix your life."
Elara looked at the cash. It was more money than she had ever seen. It was freedom. All she had to do was let a stranger die.
"And Leo?" she asked, her voice trembling. "What happens to him when his mother is gone?"
"Leo is resilient. Children forget."
Elara thought of the birdcage drawing. *Mommy is sleeping.* Leo knew. He had always known. Leaving him here with this man wasn't just negligence; it was a death sentence for his soul.
Elara looked Julian in the eye. She forced her hands to stop shaking. She channeled every ounce of grief she had carried for Toby and forged it into steel.
"Okay," she lied. "I want the money."
Julian smiled. It was a thin, victorious thing. "Smart girl. Go to your room. I'll deal with the door."
He stepped aside. Elara walked past him, her legs feeling like lead. She didn't run until she turned the corner.
