Chapter 7

The Aftermath

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic, but it was a different kind. It smelled of healing, not harm.
Leo sat in the chair, his arm in a sling. Sarah was safe; police units had secured their home within minutes of Leo’s call.
Sasha lay in the bed. Her hand was casted, pins holding the thumb in place. Her thigh was stitched.
"The DA says he's pleading insanity," Leo said quietly. "But with the evidence in his basement... he's never getting out."
"He can't hurt anyone anymore," Sasha said. "I took his hands."
Leo looked at her. "I'm sorry, Sasha. I led him right to us. I let him into my house."
"You loved your wife, Leo. He used the best part of you against you. That’s not a weakness."
Leo smiled, a tired, genuine smile. "You dislocated your own thumb. That was... terrifying."
"It was necessary."
"You know," Leo said, standing up. "You proved him wrong. You didn't kill him. You showed mercy. That’s not a weapon, Sasha. That’s a human being."
