Chapter 3

The Archive of Flesh

The alliance was born of desperation and a shared ghost. For Silas, the ghost was Nora. For Elara, it was the thousands she had failed to save.
They moved through the sewers to bypass the Ministry patrols. Elara led him to the sub-basement of the Ministry of Sanitation—the Records Division.
"We need proof," Silas said, his germaphobia screaming as they waded through knee-deep gray water. "If I can get the intake logs for the Sanatorium, I can prove they aren't treating patients."
"You still think you can arrest your way out of this," Elara muttered, checking the charge on a handheld EMP device. "But fine. We get the logs."
They infiltrated the ventilation shaft, dropping into the Archive Room. It was a massive, circular chamber filled with pneumatic tubes and endless rows of filing cabinets.
Silas went to the terminal. He removed his gloves to type—a rare, terrifying exposure—but he needed the dexterity.
He searched for *Nora Vane*.
The screen flickered green.
*SUBJECT: Vane, Nora.*
*ADMITTED: Cycle 449.*
*STATUS: Processed.*
*LOCATION: Under-Sanctum, Node 7.*
"Processed," Silas read. "Not deceased. Processed."
"Silas," Elara warned, looking at the door. "We have company."
"What is Node 7?" Silas typed frantically. "What is the Under-Sanctum?"
A schematic appeared on the screen. It showed the city of Ouroboros. And beneath it, a massive, sprawling red mass that dwarfed the buildings above. It looked like a root system, or a tumor, stretching for miles.
*ENTITY DESIGNATION: BROODMOTHER.*
"My god," Silas breathed. "It’s not a metaphor. There’s something down there."
The doors blew open.
Ministry Enforcers—men in heavy, rubberized armor wielding flamethrowers—stormed the room.
"Freeze!"
Elara triggered her EMP. The lights died. The electronic locks on the doors seized.
"Run!" she shouted.
They sprinted into the dark corridors. But the Ministry knew the terrain. They were herded, pushed deeper and deeper into the facility, away from the exits, toward the waste disposal chutes.
They reached a dead end. A catwalk over a massive, yawning pit that smelled of ozone and raw meat.
"Surrender!" the Enforcer Captain shouted from the other end of the catwalk.
Elara looked at Silas. "They won't let us leave."
"I have the data," Silas said, clutching the drive he had pulled from the terminal. "We can expose them."
A shot rang out.
Elara jerked back, clutching her shoulder. She fell against the railing.
Silas lunged for her, catching her hand. But the railing gave way.
They both fell.
Down into the dark. Down into the heat. Down into the belly of the city.
