Chapter 3

The Midpoint Twist

The office was empty. It was 12:30 PM. The rain battered the windows, a relentless drumbeat.
Nora stood outside Adrian’s office. He had left for a "stakeholder lunch."
**[SKILL ACTIVATED: LOCKPICK (BEGINNER).]**
She jammed a paperclip into the lock. It was ridiculous. It shouldn't have worked on an executive door. But the System bar filled—*Click.*
Nora slipped inside. The room smelled of ozone and old blood. She rushed to his computer. It was locked, but the System provided a brute-force hacking mini-game. She matched the patterns, sweat trickling down her back.
* Access Granted.*
She opened the "Restructure" folder.
It wasn't a kill list.
It was an investigation log.
* Subject: Unknown Mimic entity.*
* Location: Archival Solutions Inc.*
* Status: Active.*
* Casualties: 3 confirmed.*
* Method: Entity consumes target, assumes likeness, then erases digital history to prevent tracking.*
Nora blinked. The text blurred.
* Notes: The entity is drawn to high anxiety and fear. It feeds on neuro-chemical spikes.*
Adrian wasn’t the killer. He was hunting the killer.
"Interesting reading material?"
The voice came from the shadows. Nora spun around.
Adrian stood in the doorway. He hadn't made a sound. The **[DANGER]** tag flared so bright it hurt her eyes.
"I—I can explain," Nora stammered.
"You can't," Adrian said, stepping forward. "Because you shouldn't be able to see any of this. The firewall I put on this building should have kept the sleepers asleep."
He looked at her, really looked at her, his eyes narrowing. "But you... you're glowing."
**[BOSS BATTLE INITIATED]**
Nora backed up against the desk. "I know what you are," she whispered.
"And I know what *it* is," Adrian said. He moved, a blur of motion, closing the distance between them. But he didn't reach for her throat. He reached past her.
"Duck!"
Nora dropped.
Something lashed out from the air vent above the desk—a tendril of black, oily shadow. It struck where Nora’s head had been a second ago.
Adrian caught the tendril with his bare hand. His skin sizzled, smoke rising, but he didn't let go. He yanked, hard.
A scream echoed through the walls—not human, but a digital screech, like a modem dying.
"Get behind me!" Adrian roared, his vampire visage surfacing—fangs lengthening, eyes turning black.
Nora scrambled behind the heavy oak desk.
"You're not the player, Nora," Adrian shouted over the noise of the struggling shadow. "You're the bait! The System you're seeing? It's a curse! The Mimic tagged you to track your fear!"
