Chapter 4
The Refraction Theory
❧
Elena’s office was a cramped space stacked high with dossiers on provenance—the history of ownership.
"You found something?" Elena asked as Julian entered, ushering Lily to a chair in the corner with a tablet.
"Lot 734," Julian said. "The junk crystal. Who put it together?"
"Arthur did," Elena said. "It was his last consignment. From the same estate as The Pure."
"And who is trying to buy it?"
Elena typed on her computer. "Oddly enough, we’ve had three pre-auction offers for the entire lot. All anonymous. All rejected because house policy requires open bidding."
"Arthur wasn't murdered for the diamond in the safe," Julian said, pacing the small room. "He was murdered because he figured out the trick."
"What trick?"
"The Pure isn't missing. It was never in the safe. The stone in the safe—the one that isn't there—was probably a paste replica meant to dazzle the investors."
Julian pulled the glass paperweight from the evidence bag he had pocketed.
"Arthur died holding this. Why? He was comparing it."
"Comparing it to what?"
"To the stopper in the decanter in Lot 734," Julian said. "Elena, Arthur was an expert. He suspected the estate was laundering the diamond. If you sell a 100-carat diamond openly, you pay millions in taxes, and the provenance is scrutinized. But if you recut it... if you hide it in plain sight as a piece of junk glass..."
"You sell it to a confederate for pennies," Elena realized, her eyes widening. "The buyer wins the lot for $200, takes the 'stopper' home, and has a tax-free, untraceable diamond worth fifty million."
"Arthur figured it out," Julian said. "He was testing the refraction. He realized the 'stopper' was the diamond. He confronted someone. Probably Sterling."
"Marcus?" Elena shook her head. "He’s arrogant, but a killer?"
"He’s broke," Julian said. "I ran his financials while Lily was eating fruit snacks. He’s leveraged to the hilt. He needs this sale. Or... he needs the diamond."
"If Marcus knows Arthur knew..." Elena started.
"Then Marcus knows the diamond is in the decanter," Julian finished. "And he’s going to make sure he wins Lot 734 tonight."
"Tonight?"
"The auction," Julian checked his watch. "The gala starts in two hours. Sterling moved the timeline up. He claimed 'security concerns' after Arthur’s death."
Julian stood up. "I need to get that stopper into evidence."
"I'll get the lot pulled," Elena said, reaching for the phone.
"No," Julian stopped her hand. "If we pull it, he runs. We need to catch him in the act. We need him to bid on it."
