Chapter 1
The Upgrade
❧
The city looked different from the ninety-fifth floor. From down below, on the cracked pavement where Mia used to wait for the bus in freezing rain, the metropolis was a grey, grinding beast of exhaust fumes and unpaid bills. But from the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Spire’s penthouse, it was just a grid of glittering lights, silent and distant.
Mia pressed her hand against the cold glass. Her fingernails were chipped, the polish flaking away—a remnant of her life from twenty-four hours ago. That life was over. The eviction notice, the student loan emails, the smell of burnt coffee that clung to her hair—all gone.
"The view suits you," a voice said. Smooth, frictionless, and precise.
Mia turned. Mr. Sterling stood in the archway of the sunken living room. He was a man of indeterminate age. His hair was a silver-fox grey, perfectly coiffed, and his suit fit him with architectural precision. But it was his skin that always made Mia pause. It was flawless, devoid of pores or wrinkles, stretching over his cheekbones like high-quality vellum.
"It’s incredible, Sterling," Mia breathed. "I still can’t believe I’m here."
"Believe it, my dear. You were a diamond in the rough. I merely provided the setting." He walked toward her, holding a long, flat velvet box. "A welcome gift. To mark the start of your renovation."
Mia’s heart hammered against her ribs. She had read about arrangements like this on forums. *Sugar babies. Benefactors.* She had expected compromise. She had expected to trade her body for rent. But Sterling hadn’t touched her. He had only looked at her, tilting his head like a jeweler inspecting a gem for inclusions.
He opened the box. Inside lay a heavy gold choker. It was thick, solid metal, not a chain, shaped to contour perfectly to a human neck.
"It’s heavy," Mia said as he lifted it.
"Value always has weight," Sterling replied.
He stepped behind her. The cold metal touched her throat, sending a shiver down her spine. There was a sharp, mechanical *click* as it locked into place. It was tight—not choking, but omnipresent. A constant pressure against her jugular.
Mia reached up to touch it. "It’s beautiful."
"It anchors you," Sterling said softly. He gripped her shoulders, turning her to face the reflection in the glass window. "You have such potential, Mia. The bone structure is exquisite. But..." He traced a line down her jaw with a thumb that felt strangely cool. "You’re a bit loose around the edges. Tired. We need to polish that out."
"I can join a gym," Mia offered quickly, desperate to please.
Sterling chuckled, a sound devoid of humor. "No need for such crude methods. I’ve arranged a treatment for you tonight. While you sleep. You won’t feel a thing."
He handed her a glass of champagne. The liquid was pale gold, matching the metal around her neck. "Drink. Rest. Tomorrow, we unveil the real you."
Mia drank. The champagne tasted sweet, heavy, and tasted faintly of almonds. By the time the glass was empty, the floor was tilting. Sterling caught her before she fell, his grip firm and unyielding, like a clamp.
