Chapter 2
The Beast in the Basement
❧
The Jade Estate was a ghost story made of stone.
Located in the heart of the French Concession, hidden behind high walls and ancient banyan trees, it was a sprawling *Siheyuan*—a traditional courtyard compound that should have been demolished fifty years ago to make way for skyscrapers. Instead, it sat like a brooding beast, swallowing the moonlight.
Mei was led through a maze of corridors. The silence here was heavy, oppressive. It smelled of wet earth, incense, and something metallic. Like old copper. Or blood.
They didn't take her to a bridal suite. They took her to the basement.
The heavy steel door groaned as the elderly butler pushed it open. "The Master is... indisposed," the butler said. "Please. He needs your presence."
Mei stepped inside.
The room was vast, stripped of furniture. The walls were reinforced concrete, scratched and gouged as if attacked by heavy machinery. In the center of the room, chained to a massive iron pillar, was a man.
Or at least, something that had once been a man.
He was naked from the waist up, his skin pale and slick with sweat. Muscles coiled under his flesh like serpents. But it was his face that stopped Mei’s heart.
He was beautiful. Terrifyingly so. High cheekbones, a sharp jawline, hair black as ink falling over his eyes.
But his eyes were glowing. Not a reflection of light—they were burning with a dull, crimson luminescence.
He was growling. A low, vibrating sound that rattled Mei’s teeth.
"Chen Feng," the butler whispered. "He is suffering from Qi Deviation. The excess energy... it burns him. He needs an anchor."
Mei backed up against the door. "He's a monster."
"He is an Alpha," the butler corrected. "And you, Miss Lin, have the Yin blood required to cool the fire. Approach him."
"No," Mei whimpered.
The butler pulled a document from his jacket. "Your father's debt is cleared. The money is wired. But if you walk out that door, the transaction is reversed. The Sharks will not stop at fingers this time."
Mei looked at the paper. Then she looked at the man—the creature—straining against the chains.
She had spent her entire life cleaning up other people's messes. She had spent her entire life being the sacrificial lamb for her family. This was just a bigger altar.
Mei stepped forward.
The creature’s head snapped up. He sniffed the air. The crimson in his eyes flared brighter.
*Mine.*
The word wasn't spoken. It was projected directly into her skull, a headache that split her mind open.
Mei trembled, but she kept walking. She stopped inches from him. The heat radiating off his body was intense, like standing next to an open oven door.
"Feng," she whispered, testing the name.
He lunged. The chains pulled taut with a deafening *clank*. He stopped an inch from her face.
He inhaled deeply, smelling her neck. The growl in his chest softened, turning into a purr. The madness in his face receded slightly, replaced by a look of desperate, starving hunger.
"Touch him," the butler commanded from the shadows.
Mei reached out. Her hand shook as she placed it on his bare chest, right over his heart.
It beat against her palm like a hammer. *Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*
The moment her skin touched his, a shockwave went through the room. Feng gasped, his head falling back. The red in his eyes began to dim. The tension in his muscles uncoiled.
He slumped forward, resting his forehead against her shoulder. He was heavy. Hot.
"Quiet," he murmured, his voice human now, deep and rough with disuse. "It's finally quiet."
Mei stood frozen, holding the monster in the dark basement, realizing with a sinking dread that the chains weren't just for him. They were for her, too.
