Chapter 2

The Meat Grinder

The Training Pits were converted into an arena. The mud was turned into a slurry of blood and rain.
The brothers fought back-to-back.
Their first opponents were the Gregor brothers—two hulking brutes from the heavy infantry. They shifted immediately, turning into seven-foot-tall Lycans with matted gray fur and jaws that could snap steel.
Ren stood in the center of the ring, human and fragile. He closed his eyes.
*Connect.*
The world shifted. He wasn't seeing with his eyes anymore; he was seeing through the Tether. He felt Val’s heartbeat as his own. He felt the adrenaline flooding Val’s veins. He saw the arena in a 360-degree panorama of threat assessment.
*Left flank. Heavy swing incoming,* Ren projected the thought.
Val didn't hesitate. He ducked under the Gregor brother’s claw swipe with impossible speed.
*Kidney shot. Pivot. Throat.*
Val moved like a marionette guided by a master puppeteer. He slammed a fist into the werewolf’s kidney, spun, and drove his elbow into the creature’s trachea. The wolf gagged and went down.
The second brother roared, lunging for Ren. This was the standard tactic: kill the Runt, break the Titan.
Ren didn't move. He didn't flinch.
*Now.*
Val intercepted the lunge mid-air.
He didn't just block it. He shifted.
The "Titan Shift" was a nightmare to behold. Val’s bones cracked and expanded with a sound like gunfire. His skin split to reveal plates of obsidian-hard fur. He grew to nine feet, a monstrosity of muscle and rage.
Val caught the attacking wolf by the throat and slammed him into the mud. The impact shook the ground, rattling the teeth of the spectators.
Val roared, a sound that wasn't wolf, but something older. Something tectonic.
The fight was over in thirty seconds.
As Val shifted back, shrinking down to his human form, he stumbled.
Ren was there instantly, catching him.
"I got you," Ren whispered.
Val was burning up. His skin was scorching hot. He coughed, and a spray of bright arterial blood splattered onto the mud.
"Just... just the shift," Val gasped, wiping his mouth. "Takes a lot out of me."
"You're pushing too hard," Ren worried, steering him toward the exit tunnel. "We need to conserve energy for the semi-finals."
"I'm fine," Val grunted, pulling away slightly. "Focus on the strategy, Ren. Leave the heavy lifting to me."
They swept the quarter-finals. Then the semi-finals.
It was a massacre. The synergy of Ren’s tactical genius and Val’s raw power was unstoppable. They were a perfect organism. One mind, one weapon.
But with every victory, the cost grew.
In the semi-final match against a speed-specialist named Silas, Ren took a grazing hit. Silas had managed to slip past Val’s guard and clipped Ren’s shoulder with a claw.
It was a shallow scratch. Ren barely felt it.
But across the arena, Val screamed.
Val dropped to one knee, clutching his own shoulder. His arm went limp.
Ren froze. *Val?*
Val forced himself up, his eyes glowing with a manic fury. He caught Silas and broke his back with a single blow.
When the dust settled, Ren ran to his brother. He checked Val’s shoulder.
There was no scratch. But the entire shoulder was black and purple, a massive hematoma blooming under the skin.
"He didn't hit you," Ren whispered, staring at the bruise. "He hit me."
Val pulled his shirt up, covering the mark. "The Tether works both ways, Ren. You know that. Shared pain."
"That wasn't shared," Ren said, his stomach churning. "I felt a scratch. You took a sledgehammer blow."
"We won," Val said, his voice hard. "That’s all that matters. Get to the Barracks. We rest."
