Chapter 2
The Sanctuary
❧
The mood in the Glass House shifted with the moon.
By the third night of the cycle, the calm luxury had evaporated, replaced by a restless, prowling energy. Elias paced the length of the living room, his bare feet silent on the polished concrete. He stopped at the window, staring out at the dark tree line.
"They are coming," he said.
Lily looked up from the velvet sofa where she was reading. "Who?"
"Land wolves," Elias growled. The sound vibrated in his chest, deep and tectonic. "Hunters. They smell the wealth. They smell the territory. They do not know this land belongs to the Deep."
Lily felt the old panic—the poverty panic—clawing at her throat. "What do we do? Do we leave? Take the car?"
Elias turned to her. His face was stark, the human mask slipping to reveal the predator beneath. His teeth looked sharper. His pupils were slits.
"The roads are watched," he said. "We cannot go up. We must go down."
He walked over to her and knelt. He took her small, manicured hands in his own.
"My lineage is old, Lily. Older than the trees. We do not den in caves of dirt. We den beneath the silt."
He gestured to the lake.
"There is a cavern," he explained, his voice urgent, hypnotic. "Deep in the trench. It is air-pocketed. Safe. No hunter can swim that deep. No bullet can reach us."
Lily pulled her hands back slightly. "Elias... I can't breathe underwater. I'm human."
"I know what you are," he said intensely. "You are mine. Do you think I would let you perish?"
"But the pressure... the cold..."
"I will be your shield," Elias vowed. "I will wrap you in my fur. I will swim fast. It will take only moments. You hold your breath—like we practiced in the tub—and when you open your eyes, we will be home."
Lily looked at the dark glass. She imagined the men with guns coming up the driveway. She imagined being thrown back onto the street, alone, without Elias’s heavy, suffocating protection.
The world out there was sharp and cruel. Elias was dangerous, yes, but he cherished her.
"You promise?" she whispered. "You promise you won't let go?"
"I would sooner stop my own heart," Elias said. "Trust me, little pearl. Trust me completely."
Lily looked into his glowing eyes. She saw love there. A terrible, consuming, irrational love.
"Okay," she breathed.
