Chapter 3
The Red Ledger
❧
The dynamic shifted. The chain stayed off.
Dante moved through the bunker like a ghost haunting his own tomb. He slept in Cain’s bed. He ate Cain’s food. He let Cain touch him, and for the first time in his life, the sex wasn't a performance. It was a grounding wire.
But the question remained. *Why?*
A week into captivity, Cain went outside to check the perimeter sensors. He left his tactical tablet on the table.
Dante knew he shouldn't touch it. But the curiosity was a physical itch.
He swiped the screen. Passcode locked. He tried *0000*. Nothing. He tried the date of his own abduction.
* Unlock.*
Dante opened the files. He found a folder labeled **CONTRACT: RUSSO**.
He opened it. It wasn't a kidnapping order.
**TARGET:** Dante Russo.
**CLIENT:** Salvatore Russo.
**OBJECTIVE:** Termination. Make it look like a cartel hit.
**FEE:** $2 Million.
Dante stared at the screen. The air left his lungs.
His father hadn't just sold him. He had ordered him put down like a sick dog. The "liability" remark at dinner hadn't been a warning; it had been a sentencing.
"I told you," Cain’s voice came from the doorway.
Dante looked up. His eyes were dry. The pain was so deep it had gone past tears into numbness.
"He hired you to kill me," Dante whispered.
Cain walked over and took the tablet. "Yes."
"You took the money?"
"Half up front."
"Then why am I alive?" Dante stood up, his voice rising. "Why go through all this? Why kidnap me? Why fuck me? Why not just put a bullet in my head and collect your check?"
Cain threw the tablet onto the cot. He closed the distance between them in two strides, grabbing Dante by the shoulders.
"Because the first time I saw you through my scope, I didn't see a target," Cain growled. "I saw a waste of something beautiful. I decided the old man didn't deserve to break you. I decided I wanted you."
"So you stole me?"
"I saved you."
"To keep me in a cage?"
"Is it a cage, Dante?" Cain gestured around the bunker. "Or is it the first place you've ever been safe?"
Dante opened his mouth to argue, but the truth stuck in his throat. He *was* safe. He was fed. He was wanted. For the first time, he wasn't an accessory; he was the prize.
"They're coming," Cain said abruptly.
Dante blinked. "Who?"
"Your family. I went rogue. I kept the money and the target. That’s bad for business. Your father tracked the transponder in my truck before I disabled it. They're about ten miles out."
Cain walked to a weapons locker and pulled out an assault rifle. He tossed a heavy 9mm pistol to Dante.
Dante caught it, the metal cold and heavy. "What do I do with this?"
"You choose," Cain said, racking the slide on his rifle. "Run out the back door into the swamp. Keep your head down. If they find you, tell them I kidnapped you. Tell them I tortured you. Cry. Make them believe it. They might spare you."
"And you?"
"I stay. I buy you time."
"You'll die," Dante said.
Cain looked at him. A small, crooked smile touched his scarred lips. "I'm a mercenary who stole a Don's son. I was dead the minute I touched you."
