Chapter 1

Room Nine

Consciousness returned to Luca Vesperi not with a gasp, but with the cold, sterile hum of high-voltage halogens.
He didn't open his eyes immediately. He lay still, assessing his body. His head throbbed with the chemical hangover of a powerful sedative—likely Midazolam, if the metallic taste in his mouth was any indication. His wrists were heavy. Steel. Cold against the skin.
He opened his eyes.
The room was a perfect cube of gray concrete, twenty feet by twenty feet. There were no windows. There were no visible doors. The corners were rounded to prevent shadows from gathering, a psychological trick to induce disorientation.
Luca knew this room. He knew the specific pour of the concrete. He knew the lumen count of the lights recessed into the ceiling. He knew that the air cycling through the vents was kept at a chilling sixty degrees to prevent sleep.
He was in The Oubliette. Specifically, Room 9. His masterpiece.
"No," Luca whispered, the sound deadened instantly by the acoustic dampening panels hidden within the walls.
He pulled at his wrists. He was shackled to a heavy steel ring bolted into the floor.
"Luca?"
The voice was a terrified whimper from across the room.
Luca’s head snapped up. Through the haze of the drug, he saw a figure huddled against the opposite wall, similarly chained.
"Camilla?"
His wife looked small in the gray vastness. She was wearing the silk nightgown she had gone to sleep in—pale blue, delicate, utterly out of place in this industrial hell. Her dark hair was matted, her eyes wide with a terror that tore at Luca’s chest.
"Luca, where are we?" she sobbed, pulling at her chains. "It’s so cold."
"Don't move," Luca commanded, his voice cracking. He shifted into crisis mode, burying the panic under layers of ice-cold logic. "Don't pull on the chains, it will only bruise you. Look at me, Cami. Look at me."
"I’m scared," she wept.
"I know. But I’m here."
* I’m here.* The irony tasted like bile. He was the Architect. He had built this place to break men who claimed to be unbreakable. He had designed it to be the end of the line.
* Click.*
The sound came from the hidden speakers embedded in the ceiling.
"Welcome home, Architect."
The voice was smooth, processed, but undeniably familiar. Luca froze.
"Dante," Luca hissed.
"I’m glad you remember," the voice replied. "It’s been five years, hasn't it? Since you sat in that chair and I sat where you are now? You told me that pain was a conversation, Luca. You said we were just talking."
Dante. A low-level earner for the Romanos. Luca had kept him in Room 4 for three weeks. He had broken Dante’s mind, reshaped it, and sent him back out as a hollowed-out husk. Or so he thought.
"What do you want?" Luca shouted at the ceiling. "Let her go. She has nothing to do with this."
"She has everything to do with this," Dante’s voice purred. "You built this room to test loyalty. To see what a man would trade to stop the pain. Today, we are going to test your marriage. The rules are simple, Luca. Only one person leaves Room 9."
The lights buzzed louder.
"Let the games begin."
