Chapter 3

The Cage

For seven days, Elian lived in a gilded cage.
The East Wing was luxurious—silk sheets, hot running water, food that wasn't rat-on-a-stick. But the windows were reinforced glass, and the door was guarded by a golem made of iron and bone.
Every morning, Elian was dragged to Kaelen’s bedside.
The dynamic shifted. Kaelen wasn't just a patient; he was a predator playing with his food.
"You have hands like a pianist," Kaelen remarked on the third day, as Elian checked the sutures.
"They're surgeon's hands," Elian snapped. "Something you wouldn't understand. You only know how to destroy."
"Creation and destruction are siblings, Doctor," Kaelen smirked. "You destroy your own well-being to create my health. Is that not a form of violence?"
"It's sacrifice. It's called empathy."
"It's called weakness."
On the fifth night, the alarm klaxons blared.
Elian was woken by the guards and rushed to the main chamber. Kaelen was thrashing on the bed, his body radiating heat like a furnace. The Ichor Rot was flaring.
"He's burning up," the lieutenant shouted. "Fix him!"
Elian rushed to the bed. Kaelen was delirious. He grabbed Elian’s shirt, pulling him down.
"The Pale King," Kaelen raved, his eyes wide and unseeing. "He's coming through the Veil. He wants the Ichor... he wants the city..."
"Kaelen, look at me," Elian commanded, placing cool hands on the warlord's burning face.
"I have to stop him," Kaelen whispered, a rare vulnerability cracking his armor. "If the Pale King takes the Spire... he opens the door to the Void. Everyone dies. The beggars... the whores... everyone."
Elian froze.
He had thought Kaelen was just a greedy mobster fighting for turf. But in his fever, the truth spilled out. Kaelen Voss was a monster, yes, but he was the monster standing at the gate, keeping the *real* demons out.
"He's the dam," Elian realized aloud. "He's holding back the flood."
Elian made a decision. He didn't just treat the symptoms. He climbed onto the bed, straddling Kaelen to pin him down. He placed both hands over Kaelen’s heart.
He pushed deep. He didn't just knit flesh; he poured his own stamina into Kaelen’s bloodstream to fight the necrosis.
It felt like drowning in acid. Elian screamed, arching his back.
Kaelen gasped, clarity returning to his eyes as he leeched off Elian’s strength. He looked up at the man hovering over him, haloed in the gaslight. He felt the connection—not just physical, but spiritual. Elian was sharing the burden of his existence.
Kaelen reached up and gripped Elian’s waist, anchoring him. For a moment, amidst the pain, there was an intimacy so sharp it terrified them both.
