Chapter 1
The Canon Fodder’s Awakening
❧
The first thing Ren noticed was the smell. It was a pungent cocktail of stale beer, wet cardboard, and the metallic tang of city smog.
The second thing he noticed was the cold. It seeped through the thin, moth-eaten fabric of his oversized coat, biting into skin that felt far too thin and ribs that protruded far too much.
Ren opened his eyes. He wasn't in his dorm room. He wasn't staring at the cracked ceiling fan he used to count sheep. He was lying cheek-to-concrete in a puddle of oily rainwater.
Above him, a neon sign flickered with a menacing, electric buzz: *CLUB OBSIDIA*.
Ren scrambled backward, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his chest. He knew this sign. He knew this alley. He knew the exact shade of grimy brick that walled him in.
"No way," Ren rasped. His voice was rough, unused. "This is *The Don’s Empire*."
It was the trashy, addictive mafia webnovel he had been binge-reading before his heart gave out during finals week. And if this was the alley behind Club Obsidia... and if he was wearing rags...
Ren looked down at his hands. They were caked in grime, the fingernails broken and dirty. He patted his pockets. Empty. No phone. No wallet. Just a half-eaten crust of bread.
He was "Beggar No. 3."
The realization hit him like a physical blow. In Chapter One of the novel, Sebastian Vane—the devastatingly handsome, morally bankrupt billionaire protagonist—exits Club Obsidia at midnight. A rival gang, the Red Scorpions, launches an ambush. Sebastian survives because he has plot armor.
Beggar No. 3, who is sleeping behind the dumpster, catches a stray bullet to the lung and dies alone in the mud. Collateral damage to establish the gritty tone of the setting.
Ren checked the digital clock glowing red in the window of the laundromat across the street.
* 11:58 PM.*
"Two minutes," Ren whispered, panic clawing at his throat. "I have two minutes before I get turned into Swiss cheese."
He tried to stand, but his legs were weak from malnutrition. He stumbled, catching himself on the dumpster. He could run. He could scramble over the chain-link fence and disappear into the Onyx District. He could survive tonight.
But then what? He would still be a starving, nameless beggar in a city ruled by wolves. He would die of exposure within a week, or be picked off by a street gang.
Ren looked at the heavy steel door of the club’s VIP exit.
In two minutes, the most powerful man in Veridia was going to walk out that door. A man with infinite wealth. A man who needed a miracle.
Ren didn't want to survive. He wanted to win.
He took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of rotting garbage and rain. He wiped the mud from his eyes. He didn't run away from the door. He moved closer to it, crouching in the shadows of the fire escape, his muscles coiled like cheap springs.
He wasn't going to be collateral damage. He was going to be a plot twist.
