Chapter 3

The Library of Truths

The days between Christmas and New Year's blurred into a gray loop of psychological warfare. Julian didn’t hit her. He didn’t touch her sexually. He did something worse. He made her exist in the space of her past sins. He made her read aloud from old diaries he had found in her luggage. He made her polish the silver until her fingers bled, watching her with a glass of whiskey in hand, critiquing her form.
But as the days passed, Julian’s sadism began to fracture. He was trying to break a horse that had already been broken. She didn't fight back. She didn't scream. She took every insult with a bowing of her head, a quiet acceptance that infuriated him. He wanted the fire; he got the ashes.
On the night of December 29th, the storm intensified. The wind howled around the estate like a dying animal. Julian found Elena in the library, staring into the dying embers of the fireplace.
"Why don't you fight back?" he demanded, his voice echoing in the high-ceilinged room. He slammed his glass down on a side table. "Why don't you call me a monster? Why don't you tell me to go to hell?"
Elena turned to look at him. Her eyes were dull, exhausted. "Because I deserve this."
"Yes, you do," he spat. "You had me exiled. You had me beaten until I couldn't walk."
"I had you exiled," she corrected softly, "so they wouldn't bury you."
The silence that followed was louder than the storm outside. Julian froze. "What?"
Elena stood up. The suppression of ten years began to crack. "My father didn't care about the necklace, Julian. He knew. He knew about us. He found the letters."
Julian stepped back, shaking his head. "You're lying."
"He was going to kill you," Elena’s voice rose, trembling. "He was going to put you in the foundation of the new casino. I heard him giving the order to Luca."
She stepped toward him, reckless now. "I had to give him a reason to let you live. Theft was punishable by exile and a beating. Sleeping with the boss's daughter was punishable by death. I accused you of theft to save your life!"
"Liar!" Julian roared, grabbing her shoulders and slamming her back against the bookshelf. Books tumbled to the floor around them. "You acted the part perfectly! You looked at me with disgust while they dragged me away!"
"Because if I hadn't, he would have shot you right there!" Elena screamed back, tears finally flowing freely, not pearls now, but a torrent of pain. "I broke my own heart to keep yours beating! I lived with that guilt every single day. So go ahead, Julian. Torture me. Break me. You can't do anything to me that I haven't already done to myself."
Julian stared at her, his chest heaving. His hands were still gripping her shoulders, but the pressure had changed. It wasn't violence anymore; it was a desperate anchor. He searched her eyes, looking for the deception, the "princess" lie.
He found only raw, bleeding truth.
He released her as if burned and backed away, running a hand through his hair. "No," he muttered. "No, that changes nothing."
But they both knew it changed everything.
