Chapter 5

Scars and Champagne

New Year's Eve arrived with a vengeance. The blizzard had cleared, leaving a sky full of razor-sharp stars.
They were in the drawing room, the fire roaring in the hearth. The tension that had been building since the library, since the locked door, was now at a breaking point. It was no longer about revenge. It was about possession.
Julian poured two glasses of champagne. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing hers. The contact sent a shockwave through her.
"To the New Year," he said, his voice mocking.
"To survival," she countered.
He took the glass from her hand and set it down. "Stop pretending, Elena."
He pulled her to him, his hands rough, seeking. This time, she didn't flinch. She met him, her hands tangling in his hair. The kiss was violent, a collision of teeth and tongue, a decade of starvation being fed all at once.
He spun her around, unzipping the back of the dress he had forced her to wear. The silk pooled at her waist.
Julian froze.
His hand traced the skin of her back. Elena stiffened. She knew what he was seeing. Thin, white lines. Old scars.
"What is this?" His voice was a low growl.
"My father," she said, staring into the fire. "He didn't like that I cried when you were exiled. He thought it showed weakness. He... corrected me."
Julian’s hand trembled against her skin. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. She hadn't just saved him. She had paid for his life with her own blood. While he was building an empire on hate, she was being flayed for love.
He spun her around, his eyes wild. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Would you have believed me?"
Julian didn't answer. He turned to the side table, sweeping the crystal decanters and glasses onto the floor with a roar of fury. They shattered, glittering shards flying across the Persian rug.
He wasn't angry at her. He was angry at the time. The ten years of hate he had nurtured, wasted. He had wanted to destroy her, but she was already destroyed.
He grabbed her face, forcing her to look at him. "You belong to me," he said, the words fierce and possessive. "Not because of the debt. Not because of the contract. But because no one else is allowed to bleed you. Do you understand? Only I get to break you, Elena. And I am done breaking you."
He kissed her again, desperate and consuming, claiming her amidst the wreckage of the room.
