Chapter 10
Stepping Off the Pedestal
❧
The confrontation happened the next morning, just as the doctor was signing Maya's discharge papers.
The door swung open, and Victoria and Richard Sterling stepped into the hospital room. They looked immaculate, a stark contrast to the sterile, depressing reality of the ward. Victoria’s gaze immediately snapped to Julian, who was standing by the window, packing Maya's few belongings into a duffel bag.
"Get him out of here," Victoria snapped, pointing a manicured finger at Julian. "Richard, call security."
"He stays," Maya said.
Her voice wasn't loud, but the absolute, ringing clarity of it stopped her adopted parents in their tracks. Maya was sitting up in bed, dressed in soft sweatpants and a borrowed t-shirt Julian had brought her. She looked pale and physically frail, but her eyes held a fire they had never seen before.
"Maya, you have humiliated this family enough," Richard said, his tone dangerously low. "The PR team has been working all night to spin your little drunken episode as exhaustion. You will get in the car, you will come back to the penthouse, and you will check into a discreet rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland by the end of the week."
"No," Maya said simply.
Victoria let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "No? Need I remind you of our arrangement? You walk out of here with this bartender, and you leave with nothing. The trust fund, the penthouse, the museum funding. We will pull the grant today. You will be penniless."
Maya looked at the woman who had bought her, dressed her up, and demanded perfection in return for scraps of conditional affection. For the first time in her life, Maya felt no fear. She felt nothing but a profound, liberating pity.
"Keep the money, Victoria," Maya said, her voice steady and calm. "Keep the penthouse. Keep the dresses. Withdraw the funding. I'll find another job. I'll find a museum that values my mind, not my last name."
"You won't survive a month without our money to manage your illness," Richard scoffed, though a flicker of uncertainty crossed his eyes.
"I'll manage," Maya replied, reaching out. Julian stepped forward, taking her hand in a warm, unbreakable grip. "Because for the first time in my life, I'm actually going to be resting. I resign as your daughter. I'm stepping off the pedestal. I quit."
Victoria stared at her, her face a mask of furious, impotent rage. She had lost control of her investment, and she knew it. Without another word, Victoria turned on her heel and marched out of the room, Richard following closely behind.
The door clicked shut, severing Maya's ties to the Sterling empire forever.
Maya let out a long, shaky breath, leaning heavily against Julian's arm. "I'm terrified," she admitted softly.
Julian pulled her close, kissing the top of her head. "I know. But you're free."
