Chapter 5

The Ultimatum

The sanctuary of the speakeasy could not keep the Sterling empire at bay forever.
The Midpoint Twist arrived the following Sunday, wrapped in the guise of a mandatory family dinner at the penthouse. Maya sat at the long, glass dining table, pushing a piece of sea bass around her porcelain plate. The silence in the room was heavy, oppressive, and entirely calculated.
Richard Sterling sat at the head of the table, cutting his steak with surgical precision. Victoria sat opposite Maya, her expression carved from ice.
"So, Maya," Victoria began, her voice ringing like a bell in the cavernous room. "I had a very interesting conversation with Harold from the museum board today. He mentioned you’ve been leaving the archives right at five o'clock every day for the past month."
Maya’s heart skipped a beat. "The archives close at five, Mother. My cataloging is on schedule."
"And yet, you haven't been attending the evening networking events," Richard interjected smoothly, not looking up from his plate. "You missed the symphony fundraiser on Tuesday. You missed the gallery opening on Thursday."
"I wasn't feeling well," Maya said, the familiar defensive anxiety tightening her chest. "My joints were inflamed. I needed to rest."
Victoria set her silver fork down with a sharp *clink*. She reached beneath the table and produced a manila folder, tossing it onto the glass surface. It slid across the table, stopping directly in front of Maya.
"Rest?" Victoria sneered. "Is that what they call it in the slums?"
Trembling, Maya opened the folder. Inside were half a dozen high-resolution photographs. They were surveillance shots. Pictures of Maya walking down the brick alleyway. Pictures of her pushing open the door to The Velvet Vine. A picture shot through a window, showing Maya sitting at the bar, laughing as Julian handed her a drink.
The air vanished from Maya’s lungs. Her sanctuary had been violated.
"You hired a private investigator?" Maya gasped, looking up at her parents in horror.
"We protect our investments," Richard said coldly. "We thought you were having a medical crisis. Instead, we find out you are spending your evenings slumming it in a dive bar with a tattooed nobody pouring you drinks. After everything we have done for you, after all the money we have poured into your medical treatments and your little museum hobby, this is how you repay us? By embarrassing us?"
"He's not a nobody!" Maya shot back, a sudden, fierce protectiveness flaring up inside her. "His name is Julian. And it's not a dive bar. It’s the only place in this city where I don't feel like I'm suffocating!"
Victoria stood up, her eyes flashing with pure, unadulterated fury. "Do not raise your voice to me, you ungrateful girl. You are a Sterling. You represent this family. You are already a fragile disappointment, Maya. We tolerate your weakness because you play the part. But if you think we will allow you to drag our name through the mud with a bartender, you are deeply mistaken."
Victoria placed both hands on the glass table, leaning forward. "Here is the reality. You will sever all contact with this man immediately. You will attend the high-stakes tech acquisition party tomorrow night with your father, and you will smile, and you will be perfect. If you do not, Richard will withdraw all philanthropic funding from your museum. Your archives will be shut down, your position will be terminated, and you will be cut out of this family's trust entirely."
The ultimatum dropped into the room like an anvil.
They were holding her life's work hostage. They were demanding she choose between the only career she loved, and the only man who made her feel safe.
