Chapter 7
A Twisted Christmas
❧
Christmas morning dawned quiet and still.
Silas sat on the velvet sofa, staring into the dying embers of the fireplace. He hadn't slept in two days. He looked haggard, the polished veneer of the tech billionaire entirely stripped away. He was waiting for the inevitable. He knew the coworker would have gone to the police. He knew the digital footprint of his private medical team could eventually be traced. His perfect snow globe was cracking, the water leaking out.
He heard the soft pad of bare feet on the hardwood floor.
Silas slowly turned his head.
Clara was standing in the archway of the living room. She was wearing one of his oversized cashmere sweaters, the sleeves hanging past her fingertips. Her hair was loose, tumbling over her shoulders. She looked at him, her dark eyes entirely unreadable.
Silas stood up, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. This was it. She was going to demand he unlock the door. She was going to scream at him, tell him she hated him, tell him he was a monster.
He fell to his knees on the thick rug, the ultimate surrender of a yandere who had been caught in his own trap.
"I'm sorry," Silas choked out, his voice cracking. He looked up at her, tears pooling in his slate-gray eyes, a picture of desperate, terrifying obsession. "I'm sorry I lied. But I'm not sorry I took you. I would do it a thousand times over to keep you from freezing out there. Hate me, Clara. Tell me I'm a monster. But please... please don't ask me to let you go. I can't. I'll die if you leave me. I will literally die."
He reached out, his trembling hands grasping the hem of the sweater, pressing his forehead against her knees. He was completely, irrevocably broken at her feet.
Clara looked down at the man who had stolen her life. She saw the madness in him, the dark, twisted obsession that had driven him to trap her in the sky.
And then, she felt the familiar, terrifying void in her own mind. The darkness that threatened to swallow her whole.
Slowly, Clara sank to her knees, mirroring his posture on the rug.
Silas gasped, his head snapping up. He searched her face, expecting to find revulsion.
Instead, Clara reached out. Her small, delicate hands framed his face, her thumbs brushing away the desperate tears falling down his cheeks.
"The world out there is so cold, Silas," Clara whispered, her voice steady and eerily calm. "I don't remember anyone. I don't belong to anyone out there. I only know you."
Silas stopped breathing. The fire crackled in the grate, throwing warm light over her beautiful, surrendered face. "Clara..."
"You promised you would never let me be alone," she said, her eyes locking onto his with a dark, twisted understanding. She was choosing the cage. She was embracing the monster, because the monster was the only thing standing between her and the void. "Keep your promise, Silas. Keep me here. Keep me yours."
A ragged, disbelieving sound tore from Silas's throat. He surged forward, crushing her against his chest. His arms wrapped around her with bone-bruising force, burying his face in her neck. He held her with the triumphant, overwhelming desperation of a man who had won the ultimate prize.
"Forever," Silas swore, his voice a dark, vibrating vow against her skin. "I will keep you safe forever. You are my perfect girl. My entire world."
Clara closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders. She sank into his heat, letting the suffocating, intense intimacy of his yandere love wash over her. It was sick. It was twisted. It was a prison built on lies and obsession.
But as she leaned her head against his shoulder on Christmas morning, listening to the steady beat of his devoted heart, Clara finally smiled. She was trapped in the glass snow globe, and for the first time in her blank, empty life, she was exactly where she wanted to be.
