Open app
Chapter 4

The Midpoint Twist

By the fourth week, the new ASO strategies hit the algorithm.
Toby sat on the floor of his cramped apartment, staring at his phone in absolute disbelief. The localized subtitles and the revamped push notifications had worked. The app wasn't just surviving; it was climbing the utility charts. He was getting thousands of downloads a day from the U.S., Germany, and Spain. The retention metrics had skyrocketed. The ad revenue was ticking up faster than he could track.
He wasn't a failure. He had actually built something that worked.
For the first time in his adult life, Toby felt entirely worthy. He felt like a man who could actually stand beside a woman like Elara without dragging her down.
He immediately texted her: *Dinner tonight. My place. I'm cooking. I have something to celebrate.*
He spent hours cleaning his tiny apartment, buying actual wine instead of the boxed stuff, and cooking a pasta dish from scratch. When Elara knocked on the door, Toby practically threw it open.
She looked stunning, dressed in a sleek black dress, but her smile didn't quite reach her eyes.
"The app took off," Toby blurted out, unable to contain his excitement as he pulled her inside. "Elara, the metrics are insane. The push notifications are converting at twenty percent. I can quit the coffee shop. I can actually afford to take you on a real date."
Elara hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shoulder. "Toby, I'm so proud of you. I knew you could do it."
They sat at his tiny kitchen table, eating dinner and drinking the wine. Toby was flying high, his mind racing with possibilities, planning out a future that suddenly felt tangible. He reached across the table, taking her hand.
"I want to try again, Elara," Toby said softly, his heart hammering against his ribs. "For real this time. I was so stupid two years ago. I let my own fear convince me I wasn't good enough for you. But I'm different now. Things are different."
Elara looked down at their joined hands. A single tear slipped down her cheek, splashing onto the cheap wood of the table.
Toby’s stomach dropped. The triumphant high instantly vanished. "El? What's wrong?"
Elara took a shaky breath, looking up at him with eyes full of profound, agonizing conflict. "Toby... I came over tonight to tell you something. The firm... they offered me a promotion today."
"That's great," Toby said slowly, a cold dread creeping up his spine. "Right?"
"It’s the Director of European Marketing," Elara whispered, the words hitting the small room like a grenade. "It’s a massive step up. It's everything I've worked for. But... the position is based in London. They need me to relocate in two weeks."
The silence in the apartment was absolute.
Toby stared at her. London. Two weeks.
In a fraction of a second, the fragile confidence he had built over the last month shattered into a million irreparable pieces. The "loser" complex, the deep, insidious voice that told him he was always going to be left behind, violently resurrected itself.
He had just started crawling out of the hole, and she was already launching into the stratosphere. An indie app developer in a tiny apartment. A Marketing Director in London. The gap between them hadn't closed; it had become an ocean.
"London," Toby echoed, his voice hollowing out. He slowly pulled his hand away from hers.
"Toby, please," Elara said, reaching for him again. "We can make this work. Long distance. I can fly back, you can come visit. We just found each other again. I don't want to lose this."
"You're moving to another continent, Elara," Toby said, standing up from the table, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. He paced the small kitchen, his chest tight with panic. "You're going to be a Director. You're going to be attending galas and running boardrooms."
"And you're going to be running a successful app company!" she argued, standing up.
"It's a utility app, Elara!" Toby shouted, the insecurity finally boiling over into anger. "It's a gallery cleaner! I'm not a tech mogul. I'm a guy who got lucky with some keywords you gave me! You are outgrowing me all over again."
"I am not outgrowing you!" Elara cried, tears streaming freely now. "Why do you always do this? Why do you always decide what I want for me?"
"Because I know how the world works!" Toby shot back, retreating back into the safety of his self-sabotage. If he pushed her away now, it wouldn't hurt as much when she eventually realized he wasn't enough. "Go to London, Elara. Take the job. Don't worry about me."
