Chapter 4
The Dark Moment
❧
The confrontation happened two days later.
It was exactly one week before the Valentine's Day Gala. The penthouse felt like a pressure cooker. Chloe had been avoiding Declan, her mind reeling from the revelation in the office, swinging wildly between furious indignation and a terrifying, blooming affection.
Declan walked into the kitchen that evening, loosening his tie. "You're quiet today," he noted, his dark eyes scanning her face with that unnerving intensity.
Chloe slammed her coffee mug onto the marble counter. "Why did you do it, Declan?"
He paused, his hands dropping to his sides. "Do what?"
"Don't play corporate games with me!" she shouted, her vibrant personality exploding out of the careful confines she had built. "I went into your office. I saw the original draft. My father didn't offer me to you. You blackmailed him. You held my family's livelihood hostage so you could buy me!"
Declan’s face went completely, terrifyingly blank. His stoic mask snapped shut like a steel vault. "You went into my office."
"Yes! And thank God I did. You let me believe my family sold me. You let me hate them. Why? Why would you do something so... so calculated? So cold?"
"Because if I asked you on a date, you would have laughed in my face," Declan said, his voice dropping to a harsh, jagged whisper.
Chloe froze. The rawness in his voice was staggering.
Declan took a step forward, the distance between them evaporating. The ice was finally breaking, and underneath was a raging, desperate fire. "You are chaos, Chloe. You are light and color and noise, and I have spent my entire life living in the dark. I have loved you since you were eighteen years old, painting on the driveway while Ryan and I talked about stocks. But I didn't know how to talk to you. I didn't know how to be the kind of man a woman like you wants. So, I did what I know how to do. I drew up a contract. I made an acquisition."
"You can't acquire a person, Declan!" she cried, tears of frustration and overwhelming emotion spilling down her cheeks. "You can't trap someone in a penthouse and expect them to love you!"
Just then, the front door burst open. Ryan stood in the foyer, breathing heavily, looking between the two of them. He had let himself in with the emergency key.
"I came to drop off the gala tickets," Ryan said, his voice tight. He looked at Chloe’s tears, then at Declan’s rigid posture. "What the hell is going on here?"
"Ask your best friend," Chloe choked out. "Ask him how he blackmailed Dad into this."
Ryan’s face darkened. He dropped the tickets on the console table and crossed the room in three long strides. Without a word, he pulled his fist back and punched Declan squarely in the jaw.
The sound was a sickening crack. Declan’s head snapped to the side, and he stumbled backward into the island. A cut opened on his cheekbone, welling with bright red blood.
"Ryan, stop!" Chloe screamed, lunging forward.
But Declan didn't raise his hands to defend himself. He just stood there, slowly wiping the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand. He looked at Ryan, then looked at Chloe. The fire in his eyes had died, replaced by a profound, hollow defeat.
"He's right," Declan said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. He looked at Chloe, and for the first time, she saw the depths of his internal wound. He truly believed he was a monster, a machine incapable of genuine human connection. He believed his rigid personality would only crush her bright spirit.
"I thought... I thought if I just had you near me, I could learn how to be different," Declan whispered, the words sounding like glass shattering in his throat. "But I am exactly what you said I am. A robot. A dictator. I am suffocating you, Chloe. I can see it. The paint is gone. The music is gone. You're turning gray in this apartment, and I'm the one doing it to you."
"Declan, no—" Chloe started, reaching out, suddenly desperate to take the words back, to tell him about the tea he made her, the studio he saved.
Declan stepped back, avoiding her touch. He walked over to his briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of legal documents, and set them on the counter. He pulled his gold fountain pen from his pocket, signed his name rapidly across three different pages, and slid the stack toward Ryan.
"The merger is fully executed," Declan said, his voice dead. "All debt is cleared. Sterling Holdings retains full autonomy. The contingency clause is hereby nullified."
He looked back at Chloe, his dark eyes filled with a heartbreaking, sacrificial love. "You're free, Chloe. Keep the ring. Tell the press whatever you want. The engagement is off."
Before she could speak, before she could process the magnitude of what he had just done, Declan turned and walked out of the penthouse, the heavy oak door shutting with a final, echoing thud.
