Chapter 4

The Fall

"Do it," Micah choked out, closing his bright blue eyes. A tear slipped down his bruised cheek, carving a clean line through the dust and powdered sugar. "Just do it. It doesn't matter anymore."
Elias hesitated, his glowing fist trembling in the air. "Stop playing games, Micah. Drop the shield. Fight back."
"I don't have a shield, Elias," Micah whispered, his voice incredibly fragile, entirely stripped of its celestial resonance.
Slowly, Micah released his glamour.
The heavy trench coat shifted. The air in the ruined café didn't smell like ozone anymore; it smelled like ash and burning feathers. From beneath the coat, Micah’s wings unfurled, spreading out across the cracked linoleum floor amidst the shattered glass and ruined furniture.
Elias stared, the breath freezing in his throat. The golden light faded from his fist.
Micah’s wings weren't the brilliant, blinding white of the heavenly host. They were charred, ragged, and pitch black. They were the wings of the exiled. The wings of the fallen.
"You..." Elias stammered, his grip on Micah’s wrists instantly loosening. He fell back on his knees, staring in absolute horror and profound shock at the ruined feathers. "Micah... what did they do to you? Did they cast you out? Why?"
Micah opened his eyes, looking at Elias through a blur of tears. He slowly pushed himself up into a sitting position, pulling his knees to his chest, his charred wings wrapping defensively around his shoulders.
"They didn't cast me out," Micah sobbed, the sound small and devastatingly human. "I jumped."
The words echoed in the sudden, heavy silence of the destroyed café.
"What?" Elias whispered, his mind entirely incapable of processing the concept. An angel didn't just jump. Falling was an agony beyond comprehension, a literal tearing of the soul from the grace of the universe. It was a plunge through burning atmosphere and crushing gravity.
"Heaven was empty without you," Micah cried, burying his face in his hands. "It was exactly what you said. It was loveless. They didn't even notice you were gone, Elias. They just closed ranks and kept singing. I tried to be perfect. I tried to be the good soldier, but every time I looked at where you used to stand, it hurt. It hurt so much."
He looked up, his face raw with a messy, beautiful, perfectly human grief. "I didn't want the grace if you weren't there to share it with me. I didn't want to be an angel if it meant I couldn't be your brother. So, I walked to the edge, and I fell. I shattered my own grace just to find you."
