The Anchor

The words struck Arthur with the force of a physical blow.
The gray, impenetrable static that had suffocated him for days suddenly cracked. The sheer, immense weight of Julian’s immortal devotion poured into the fracture, melting the ice of Arthur's apathy. He wasn't a burden. He was a lifeline. He wasn't dragging a god down to the dirt; he was giving a monster a reason to stay in the light.
A ragged, tearing sob ripped its way out of Arthur’s throat. It was the first genuine sound he had made in a week.
Arthur’s knees gave out. He sank to the cold concrete, meeting his husband on the ground. He threw his arms around Julian’s neck, burying his face in the crook of the vampire’s shoulder, right over the bloodstained collar. He cried with a violent, cathartic intensity, his tears hot and fast against Julian’s freezing skin.
Julian’s arms wrapped around him instantly, pulling Arthur onto his lap, shielding him entirely from the biting urban wind. Julian rested his chin on the top of Arthur’s head, rocking him slowly, humming a low, wordless melody from a century long forgotten.
"I'm sorry," Arthur wept, his fingers digging desperately into the fabric of Julian's ruined shirt. "I'm so sorry. I couldn't see past the dark."
"You don't need to apologize to me for the dark," Julian murmured softly, pressing a kiss to Arthur's temple. "That is what I am here for."
Julian pulled back just enough to look at Arthur’s tear-stained, flushed face. The fangs were gone, retracted back into the civilized veneer of a deeply loving husband. Julian reached into his trouser pocket and retrieved the heavy gold wedding band.
He took Arthur’s trembling left hand. With slow, deliberate reverence, Julian slid the ring back onto Arthur’s finger.
"Mine," Julian whispered, a vow and a promise wrapped into one word.
"Yours," Arthur breathed back, his chest heaving, the suffocating weight finally beginning to lift from his sternum.
They stayed on the rooftop for a long time. The city roared around them, cold and indifferent, but Arthur didn't feel the chill anymore. Wrapped in his husband’s heavy cashmere coat, he rested his ear against the center of Julian’s chest. There was no heartbeat there, only an ancient, quiet stillness. But as Julian held him tight against the freezing wind, Arthur closed his eyes and finally, truly, felt safe.
