Chapter 2

The Obsidian Spire

The Obsidian Spire was a brutalist monument to Julian Vance’s ego and genius. It sat in the financial district, a towering monolith of black glass that scraped the urban sky. But Maya was not taken to the luxurious penthouse. Instead, the private elevator plunged deep into the bedrock beneath the city.
The subterranean clinic was a marvel of terrifying, cutting-edge technology. It was entirely automated. There were no nurses, no orderlies, no human anesthesiologists. The walls were seamless white composites, illuminated by recessed lighting that automatically adjusted to Maya's core body temperature and stress levels.
"Welcome to the lower levels, Dr. Lin," a smooth, disembodied voice echoed from hidden speakers. It sounded eerily similar to Julian's baritone, but perfectly modulated and entirely devoid of inflection.
Maya jumped, her medical bag slipping in her grip. "Who is that?"
"That is Aegis," Julian said, stepping out of the shadows. He was dressed in a sterile white surgical gown, looking paler and more fragile than he had at the hospital. "The environmental AI. It runs the building's mainframes, regulates the climate, and manages the automated defenses. The core you will implant in my chest is a localized node of the same intelligence. Once implanted, Aegis will synchronize my biological data with the mainframe to ensure optimal recovery."
Maya shuddered, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end. It was intensely creepy. She felt as though she had stepped into the belly of a silicon beast. She walked over to the operating table, which was surrounded by a terrifying array of dormant, multi-jointed surgical drones hanging from the ceiling like mechanical spiders.
"I told you," Maya said sharply, pointing a trembling finger at the drones. "I work alone. Manual instruments only."
"Aegis," Julian commanded, his voice tight with pain as he climbed onto the operating table. "Deactivate surgical assist drones. Lock out automated protocols in Bay One. Transfer all monitoring to manual terminal."
"Acknowledged, Julian," the synthetic voice replied. The mechanical arms retracted into the ceiling with a heavy, metallic clank.
Maya exhaled a shaky breath, setting her bag down. She prepped her instruments, finding an odd, grounding comfort in the cold, analog weight of a stainless-steel scalpel. She looked down at Julian. His eyes were closed, his chest barely rising. Beneath the billionaire armor, he was just a terrified, dying man.
"I'm going to put you under now," Maya said softly, her professional demeanor taking over. She administered the propofol. "Count backward from ten."
Julian's dark eyes fluttered open, finding hers. "Ten. Nine. Eight... Maya?"
"I'm here."
"Don't let the machine win," he whispered, before the anesthesia dragged him into the dark.
