Chapter 6

The Choice

The aftermath was a quiet, heavy devastation.
By dawn, the rogue wolves had been driven out by the surviving Sterling enforcers. The magical wards around the manor had been re-established, sealing them back inside the regency bubble.
Genevieve and the twins were resting safely in a newly secured wing of the manor. The pups were a massive, unresolved scandal—carrying the blood of the exiled, twisted twin—but Julian had formally declared them under his absolute protection. They were Sterlings, regardless of the monster who sired them.
Clara stood in the ruined library. The sun was rising, casting long, golden beams through the dusty, shattered windows. She had spent the last three hours suturing Julian’s wounds, using her modern supplies, which he had not once complained about.
She had packed her medical bag. Her duty was done. The mother was stable, the pups were alive. She could go back to the sterile, bright lights of St. Jude’s. She could go back to a world that made sense.
Footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor.
Julian entered the library. He wore a clean, dark linen shirt, the sleeves rolled up, revealing the heavy white bandages Clara had applied. He looked devastatingly tired, but the regal, commanding aura of the Alpha remained completely intact.
He stopped a few feet away from her, looking down at her packed black bag.
"You are leaving," Julian stated. It wasn't a question, but the words carried a heavy, profound weight.
"My patient is stable," Clara said, her voice tight, clutching the strap of the bag. "I have rounds at the hospital tomorrow."
Julian nodded slowly. He looked around the ruined library, at the claw marks gouged into the ancient mahogany shelves, at the shattered crystal decanters on the floor.
"I was wrong," Julian said softly.
Clara looked up, surprised.
"My traditions, my archaic rules..." Julian met her eyes, a raw, unshielded vulnerability in his gaze. "They did not save my sister tonight. You did. Your modern science, your defiance, your brilliant, stubborn mind... you saved my family."
He took a step closer. The air between them instantly sparked with that familiar, heavy electrical tension.
"Silas is still out there," Julian continued, his voice dropping into a low, intimate rumble. "He will return. The pack will be thrown into a war over the legitimacy of the pups. The manor is no longer a sanctuary. It is a battlefield."
"Then you need a general," Clara whispered, unable to look away from him.
"I have generals," Julian replied, stepping directly into her space. He reached out, his hand gently grasping her wrist, much like he had done weeks ago in this very room. But this time, he didn't stop there. He slid his hand up her arm, his fingers tangling in the messy hair at the nape of her neck.
"I don't need a doctor, Clara," Julian breathed, his forehead resting lightly against hers. "I am formally asking you to stay. Not as a physician. But as my mate. Rule this pack with me. Bring your science, bring your fire, and help me drag my family into the modern world."
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. The offer was staggering. It meant abandoning the safety of her sterile hospital for a world of magic, blood, and constant danger. It meant standing beside a man who was as terrifying as he was devoted, ruling a pack of archaic wolves who would likely despise her.
She looked past his shoulder, out the shattered library window, toward the distant, modern skyline of the city where Silas was undoubtedly waiting, plotting his revenge. She looked at the blood staining the cuffs of her own shirt—blood she had shed to bring life into a dark world.
She turned her gaze back to Julian. His gray eyes were burning, waiting for her answer, offering her a throne built on love and danger.
Clara took a slow, deep breath, feeling the chaotic, primal pull of the Sterling Manor sinking deep into her bones. She parted her lips to speak.
