Chapter 4

The Santa Monica Ambush

The Santa Monica Pier was a chaotic, neon-lit sensory overload. The smell of fried funnel cake mixed with the salty ocean breeze. The mechanical bells of the arcade games clashed with the screams from the roller coaster.
It was the perfect stage for a public performance.
"Remember," Chloe said, adjusting her designer sunglasses as they stepped out of the black SUV. "We hold hands. We smile. We buy him cotton candy. We project an effortlessly happy family unit for exactly forty-five minutes, and then we leave. The photographers have been tipped off. They are waiting near the Ferris wheel."
Julian looked at her over the roof of the SUV. He was wearing a casual henley and jeans, looking effortlessly devastating. "Got it, boss. Look madly in love."
He walked around the car, opened the rear door, and unbuckled Leo from his booster seat. He swung the six-year-old up onto his shoulders. Leo giggled, gripping Julian’s hair.
Julian extended his free hand to Chloe.
She hesitated for a fraction of a second before slipping her manicured hand into his large, calloused palm. His fingers immediately intertwined with hers, his thumb stroking the back of her hand. It was a practiced, performative gesture, but the heat of his touch sent a very real shiver up her arm.
They walked down the wooden planks of the pier. It was magical. For thirty minutes, Chloe forgot about the PR strategy. She watched Julian win a massive, stuffed purple alien at a ring-toss game for Leo. She laughed a genuine, unscripted laugh when Julian got powdered sugar all over his nose from a funnel cake. She felt the heavy, comfortable weight of his arm wrapping around her waist as they watched the ocean waves crash against the pylons.
They were a family. A happy, messy, perfect family.
"Incoming," Julian murmured suddenly, his posture stiffening, his grip tightening protectively on her waist.
Chloe snapped back to reality. Emerging from the crowd near the Ferris wheel was a pack of eight paparazzi, their heavy cameras raised, the rapid-fire *click-click-click* of shutters sounding like a swarm of angry locusts.
"Julian! Julian, over here!" one shouted.
"Is it true Beatrice is taking the kid?" another yelled, shoving a microphone aggressively forward. "Is the engagement just a stunt to keep the money?"
The questions were vicious. The flashes were blinding.
Leo, terrified by the sudden aggression and the blinding lights, buried his face into the crook of Julian’s neck, beginning to cry.
Chloe immediately stepped forward into her crisis manager mode. "No comments today. Please step back. Give the child some room."
But the paparazzi smelled blood. They surged forward, closing the circle, completely blocking their path back to the SUV. A particularly aggressive photographer shoved his massive lens directly into Chloe’s face, knocking her sunglasses off her nose.
"Hey!" Julian roared.
The playboy charm instantly vanished, replaced by a terrifying, primal fury. Julian shoved the photographer back with a forceful, one-handed thrust to the chest, his other arm locked protectively around Leo.
"Get away from my fiancé and get away from my son!" Julian snarled, his voice carrying the commanding, authoritative weight of a true leading man. "Move!"
He didn't wait for them to part. He grabbed Chloe’s hand, pulling her firmly behind his broad back, using his own body as a physical shield against the flashing bulbs and shouting reporters. He marched them aggressively through the mob, his sheer physical presence forcing the paparazzi to scatter.
They reached the SUV, throwing the doors open. Julian buckled a sobbing Leo into the back seat before turning to help Chloe inside. He slammed the door, shutting out the chaos.
The drive back to the penthouse was agonizingly silent.
When they arrived, Julian carried an exhausted Leo straight to bed. Chloe paced the living room, her mind racing, calculating the PR damage. Julian had shoved a photographer. The tabloids would spin it as a violent outburst. The conservative aunt would use it as proof of instability.
Julian walked into the living room, collapsing onto the leather sectional, his head in his hands.
"I'll draft a statement," Chloe began, pacing in front of the windows. "We'll say the photographer was aggressive, that you were acting in defense of a minor. We can leak the footage from the pier security cameras to corroborate—"
"Stop, Chloe," Julian said, his voice quiet and utterly defeated. "Just stop managing for a second."
Chloe froze, her hands dropping to her sides.
Julian looked up at her, his eyes dark with a pain she couldn't quantify. "They asked if I was keeping him for the money. They think I'm a monster who just wants access to the trust."
"It's just tabloid trash, Julian. No one believes it."
"Beatrice believes it," Julian laughed bitterly. He leaned back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. "Do you want to know why I have the playboy reputation, Chloe? Do you want to know why there's always a new photo of me stumbling out of a club with a different girl every week?"
Chloe frowned, walking slowly toward the couch. "Because you're a twenty-something movie star with too much money?"
"Because my sister was an addict," Julian whispered, the confession tearing out of him. "Sarah struggled with pills for five years. Every time she relapsed, the paparazzi would catch wind of it. They would camp outside her house. They would hound her."
Chloe’s breath hitched. She sank onto the edge of the coffee table, directly across from him.
"So, I gave them something better to look at," Julian continued, tears shining in his eyes. "Whenever Sarah was going into a spiral, whenever she needed to go to a rehab facility quietly, I would call my publicist, and I would stage a massive, drunken spectacle at a club in West Hollywood. I would act like a reckless idiot. And the cameras would flock to me. They followed the playboy, and they left my sister alone so she could get clean."
The silence in the penthouse was absolute.
Chloe stared at the man sitting across from her. He hadn't been reckless. He had been a decoy. He had actively destroyed his own public reputation, allowing the world to think the worst of him, just to protect his sister's dignity.
All the walls Chloe had spent her entire life building—the walls designed to protect her from unpredictable, chaotic men—violently shattered into dust. Julian Fox wasn't a liability. He was the most honorable, fiercely loving man she had ever met.
"Julian," Chloe whispered, her voice breaking. She slid off the coffee table, dropping to her knees on the rug directly between his legs. She reached up, her hands cupping his face, her thumbs wiping away the tears that had spilled over his lashes.
Julian looked down at her, the mask completely gone. He leaned into her touch, his hands coming up to grip her waist tightly.
"I'm so tired of faking it, Chloe," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips.
"Then don't," Chloe breathed.
Julian kissed her. It wasn't a PR stunt. It wasn't a calculated move for the cameras. It was desperate, bruising, and overwhelmingly real. Chloe kissed him back with a fierce, possessive intensity, pouring years of suppressed emotion into the touch. She tangled her hands in his hair, pulling him closer, erasing the space between them. For the first time in her life, Chloe let go of control, completely surrendering to the terrifying, beautiful freefall of falling in love.
