Chapter 2

The Obsidian Spire

Dorian did not call his security guards. Instead, he led the trembling, wide-eyed girl up a floating, translucent staircase to the pinnacle of his empire: The Obsidian Spire.
The penthouse was a masterpiece of brooding opulence. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a 360-degree view of the magical, neon-drenched city. A massive, ebony grand piano sat in the center of the room, surrounded by plush velvet sofas and shelves lined with ancient, leather-bound grimoires and modern audio-mixing boards. In the Aether, music and magic were one and the same. To perform was to cast a spell.
Lily stood awkwardly by the door, clutching her sheet music to her chest like a shield. Dorian poured a glass of amber liquid from a crystal decanter, the silver rings on his fingers clinking softly against the glass.
"So," Dorian said, turning to lean against his mahogany desk, his long legs crossed at the ankles. He took a sip, his silver eyes never leaving her face. "A human stumbles through a glamour door. Usually, mortals are blinded by the ambient magic. But you... your aura is practically humming. You are a musician."
"I play the piano," Lily whispered, her voice barely carrying across the vast room. "And I sing. Or, I try to."
Dorian’s brow arched. "You try to? How old are you, Lily?"
"Twenty-one."
Dorian let out a low, worldly chuckle that made a shiver trace its way down Lily’s spine. He was older, powerful, and entirely intimidating. The age gap between them felt like a physical chasm—he was a creature of immense, ancient authority, and she was a girl who still asked for permission to speak.
"Twenty-one," Dorian mused, pushing off the desk and walking slowly toward her. He moved with the terrifying, silent grace of a predator. "A baby. You reek of innocence. You're wearing a blouse buttoned to your chin in a realm where Sirens wear starlight and Vampires sing in blood. Why did you follow my scout through the door?"
"I failed an audition," Lily admitted, staring at his expensive leather shoes because looking into his eyes was too overwhelming. "The manager said I was too stiff. Too safe. I saw the door... and I just wanted to do something that wasn't safe."
Dorian stopped inches from her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently gripping her chin, forcing her to look up at him. His touch sent a jolt of pure electricity straight to her core.
"You are suffocating yourself," Dorian murmured, his thumb lightly tracing her jawline. "I can hear it. The magic in your blood is trapped behind a dam of good manners and parental expectations. You sing like you're apologizing for existing."
Lily gasped, the brutal accuracy of his words stripping her bare. Tears pricked her eyes, but she didn't pull away from his touch. She leaned into it, just a fraction.
Dorian’s eyes darkened, the cynical weariness in his gaze fracturing slightly at her earnest, unguarded vulnerability. For centuries, he had managed the Aether's entertainment syndicate, dealing with vain fae, manipulative warlocks, and hollow stars. This girl, with her modest clothes and profound, trapped talent, was the most fascinating thing he had seen in a hundred years.
"I will make you a deal, Lily Harper," Dorian said, dropping his hand, though the ghost of his touch lingered on her skin. "Stay here. In the Spire. For three weeks. I will train you. I will teach you how to strip away the good girl and find the monster underneath. If you survive it, I will debut you at the Solstice Gala. You will become a star in both realms."
Lily’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Stay with him? An older, powerful, dangerously seductive man in a world of magic? It broke every rule she had ever been taught. It was reckless. It was insane.
Lily looked at the grand piano. She looked at the neon city outside the window. And finally, she looked at Dorian Vance.
"Deal," she whispered.
