Chapter 5
The Confrontation and the Flight
❧
Lily burst into the Obsidian Spire, her breathing ragged, tearing the silver mask from her face and throwing it onto the marble floor.
Five minutes later, the heavy doors of the penthouse swung open. Dorian strode in, his silver eyes dark with panic.
"Lily," Dorian commanded, crossing the room. "Why did you run? The wards alerted me you had returned to the Spire."
Lily backed away, placing the heavy expanse of the mahogany desk between them. She looked at the man she had given her heart to, suddenly terrified of his age, his power, and his centuries of secrets.
"Is there a contract?" Lily demanded, her voice shaking.
Dorian froze. The commanding aura faltered for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of deep, ancient guilt.
"Who did you speak to?" Dorian asked, his voice dangerously low.
"Is there a contract, Dorian?!" Lily screamed, tears spilling over her lashes. "If I sing at the Gala, am I magically bound to you forever? Yes or no?"
Dorian closed his eyes, his jaw tightening. "Yes. But Lily, you must understand the context of the Aether’s laws—"
"You lied to me!" Lily sobbed, covering her ears. The truth was a physical blow. Seraphina was right. She was just a naive, foolish young girl who had fallen for an older man's manipulative grooming. "You broke down all my walls just to put me in a cage you own! I thought you were setting me free!"
"I am trying to protect you!" Dorian roared, stepping around the desk, his hands reaching out for her. "The magic of the Aether will consume a human soul if it isn't anchored to an immortal sponsor! The binding is a shield, Lily! It is the only way you survive the performance!"
"Don't touch me!" Lily shrieked, backing away until she hit the grand piano. "I won't be your battery. I won't be your pet."
Dorian stopped, his hands dropping to his sides. The look of profound agony on his ancient face was jarring, but Lily was too blinded by her own heartbreak to see it.
"I am leaving," Lily whispered. "I'm going back to Los Angeles. I'm going back to being safe."
Before Dorian could summon the magic to lock the doors and force her to listen, Lily bolted. She hit the private elevator, slamming the button for the ground floor.
She ran out into the dangerous, neon-lit streets of the lower Aether. It was a labyrinth of shadowed alleys, glowing magical signs, and unsavory supernatural creatures. She didn't know the way back to the glamour door. She was a mortal girl entirely out of her element.
She turned down a narrow, damp alleyway, trying to catch her breath.
Shadows detached themselves from the brick walls.
Four towering figures stepped into the neon light. They were thugs, mercenaries with scaled skin and cold, dead eyes. Stepping out from behind them was Seraphina, the Siren from the masquerade.
"Leaving so soon, little bird?" Seraphina smiled, drawing a dagger that glowed with a sickly, toxic green light. "I can't let Dorian debut a weapon like you at the Gala. It would ruin my syndicate."
Lily backed up against a dumpster, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm. "Let me go. I'm leaving the Aether."
"Oh, you can leave," Seraphina purred, raising her hand, her fingers glowing with dark magic. "But you'll leave empty. I'm going to take that beautiful, raw magic in your throat for myself. Hold her."
Two thugs lunged forward, grabbing Lily by the arms, pinning her against the brick wall.
Seraphina chanted a dark, ancient word. She thrust her hand forward, blasting a beam of black magic directly at Lily’s throat.
The silencing hex hit her like a physical blow. It felt like an iron band snapping shut around her vocal cords. Lily opened her mouth to scream, but absolutely no sound came out. The magic in her blood went terrifyingly cold, trapped behind an impenetrable wall of dark magic. She was voiceless. She was a shell.
Seraphina stepped forward, raising the toxic green dagger to carve the magical conduit from Lily’s chest.
"You should have stayed in your mundane world, girl," the Siren sneered.
