Chapter 7

The Verdict and the Vow

The afternoon sun was brilliant and warm, casting long, golden shadows across the massive marble steps of the City Civil Courthouse.
Maya walked out through the heavy brass doors, taking a deep, shuddering breath of the urban air. It smelled like victory. It smelled like freedom.
Julian walked beside her, his suit jacket slung casually over his shoulder. The corporate mask was entirely gone, replaced by a relaxed, authentic happiness that made him look devastatingly handsome.
"They suspended Thorne's license," Julian said, checking a text on his phone. "My father is furious. He's furious at Thorne for the malpractice, and he's furious at me for stealing from the firm's archives."
Maya stopped on the steps, turning to look at him, a sudden spike of worry in her chest. "Julian, your family... your legacy. Did you throw it all away for me?"
Julian smiled, reaching out to gently cup the side of her face, his thumb brushing against her cheekbone. "I threw it away for *us*, Maya. I threw it away because sitting in that courtroom today, watching you dismantle a corrupt system to protect people who couldn't protect themselves... it was the most inspiring thing I have ever witnessed. I don't want to protect billionaires. I want to fight beside you."
Maya’s heart swelled with a profound, overwhelming love. The law wasn't just a weapon anymore. It was a shield. And she didn't have to carry it alone.
"We graduate in three weeks," Maya whispered, leaning into his touch, her eyes shining. "What are you going to do?"
Julian leaned down, his face inches from hers. "I was thinking we pass the bar, rent a tiny, terrible office in the West End, and start a public interest firm. *Vance & Hayes*. It has a nice ring to it."
"You want to be my partner?" Maya smiled, a fierce, joyful spark in her eyes.
"In every sense of the word," Julian murmured.
He closed the distance, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss on the courthouse steps. It was a vow. A promise to fight the system, to protect the vulnerable, and to navigate the brilliant, chaotic future together.
Maya kissed him back, holding onto the lapels of his shirt, entirely whole, completely victorious, and finally at peace.
