Chapter 2
The Descent
❧
The air in the abandoned subway tunnels was even thicker than the street above, heavy with decades of stagnant dust and the faint, metallic tang of ozone. Mia navigated the pitch-black corridor by the weak light of her phone, her boots crunching over discarded glass and rusted debris.
She followed the subtle, intoxicating scent of woodsmoke. It wasn't the acrid, terrifying smell of a house fire, but something richer, like burning cedar and melting sugar.
A dull, rhythmic thumping vibrated through the concrete walls, leading her to a massive, rusted iron door. A single red bulb pulsed dimly above it. This was it. The Boiler Room.
Mia placed her hands against the heavy metal and pushed. The door groaned open, unleashing a wave of heat so intense it stole the breath from her lungs. It was like stepping into an active kiln.
The speakeasy was a cavernous, repurposed utility chamber bathed in deep, oppressive crimson light. Massive, dormant iron pipes ran along the ceiling, sweating condensation that sizzled as it hit the floor. The patrons inside moved in a sluggish, trance-like sway to a heavy, synthetic bassline that rattled Mia’s teeth. They looked half-dead, their eyes vacant, lost in whatever euphoric oblivion they had purchased.
And then, she saw him.
He sat in a leather booth at the far end of the room, completely untouched by the stifling atmosphere. He didn't sweat. He simply radiated. Cole. The Cinder King.
He was devastatingly beautiful, with sharp, aristocratic features and dark hair that seemed to catch the red light like dying embers. He was dressed in a crisp, dark suit that should have been suffocating in this environment. As Mia approached, his eyes locked onto her. They were a piercing, inhuman amber.
He smiled, a slow, predatory curving of his lips, as if he had been waiting for her.
