Chapter 6

The Unbroken Tether

Sadie hit the ground hard, the wind knocked out of her lungs.
She gasped, her eyes snapping open. She was lying on her back on wet asphalt. Cold, heavy rain was falling on her face. Sirens wailed in the immediate distance, cutting through the damp night air. Flashing red and blue lights painted the surrounding pine trees.
She rolled onto her side, groaning as the pain in her bruised ribs flared.
A few yards away, paramedics were rushing toward Toby Henderson, who was sitting on the bumper of a police cruiser, wrapped in a blanket, staring into space in shock.
They were back. Real Oakhaven.
"Vance," Sadie gasped, frantically searching the wet pavement.
"I'm here."
The voice was weak, but it was there. Sadie scrambled across the asphalt. Vance was lying near the tire of her wrecked Bronco, clutching his chest. He was breathing. He was solid. He was in the real world.
Sadie threw herself at him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders, sobbing uncontrollably. Vance slowly, painfully returned the embrace, burying his face in her neck, breathing in the scent of the rain.
"You're crazy," Vance whispered, his voice trembling with awe and exhaustion. "You're absolutely insane, Miller."
"I told you I wasn't letting go," Sadie wept, pulling back to look at his face. The ten-year nightmare was over. They had beaten the Whispering Fog.
But as the flashing police lights swept over them, Sadie’s smile faltered.
She looked down at her hands. Her left palm, where she had cut herself, was sealed shut, leaving a jagged, unnatural scar. But that wasn't what made the blood freeze in her veins.
From beneath the surface of the newly healed scar, a very faint, almost imperceptible wisp of white fog was slowly seeping out of her skin, curling into the cold air.
Sadie slowly looked back up at Vance. He was smiling at her, a look of profound, exhausted relief on his face. But as he coughed, a single drop of blood spattered onto his pale chin.
It wasn't red. It was pitch black.
The sirens grew louder as the Chief of Police ran toward them. Sadie stared at the black blood, and the fog curling from her own skin. She gripped Vance's hand tighter, a cold, terrifying dread settling over her heart.
They had escaped The Echo. But as the rain washed over the dying town of Oakhaven, Sadie was left to wonder if they had truly left the legend behind, or if they had simply brought it home with them.
