Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The rain drummed a relentless, rhythmic beat against the glass of the fourth-floor dorm window, matching the frantic pulse in Leo’s throat. In the gray, filtered light of morning, Julian’s room felt smaller than it had the night before—a chaotic sanctuary of half-finished canvases, charcoal dust, and the lingering scent of damp wool.
Leo was already standing, his fingers trembling as he fumbled with the buttons of his oxford shirt. He needed to be gone before the radiator stopped clanking, before the campus woke up, and certainly before their third roommate returned from his weekend trip. Every instinct honed by three years of pre-law discipline told him to retreat, to compartmentalize, and to "summon" the mask of the composed, untouchable high-achiever.
"You're doing that thing with your jaw," Julian’s voice drifted from the bed, sleep-heavy and devastatingly calm.
Leo didn’t look back. He shoved his feet into his loafers, his movements jerky. "I have a seminar at nine. I need to prep."
"It’s Sunday, Leo. And you’ve had that brief memorized for three days." Julian sat up, the duvet falling away to reveal shoulders Leo had memorized by touch only hours ago. "Are you really going to do the 'stealthy exit' routine with me? We’ve known each other since freshman orientation."
Leo finally turned, his backpack gripped like a shield. "Last night was... it was a lapse in judgment. I was stressed. You were there. I didn't mean to complicate things."
Julian stood, crossing the small distance between them in two strides. He didn't touch Leo, but his presence was a physical weight. "A lapse? You didn’t 'summon' me here because you were stressed, Leo. You’ve been calling me every time you’ve felt like you were drowning for three years. Last night was just the first time you stopped pretending that talking was enough."
"I can't do this," Leo whispered, his voice cracking. The "perfect" reputation he cultivated—the straight-edge, future-attorney persona—felt like a suit of armor that had grown too tight. "If we do this, and it breaks, I have nothing. You’re the only person who actually knows me, Jules. I can’t lose my best friend because I’m confused about who I’m supposed to be."
The confession hung in the air, raw and stripped of academic jargon. Julian reached out then, his thumb catching a stray tear Leo hadn’t realized had escaped.
"You're not 'supposed' to be anything," Julian said softly. "And you aren't losing me. You’re just finally letting me in. You looked more at peace at 3:00 AM than I’ve seen you in years. Why are you running back to being miserable?"
Leo looked around the room—at the sketches of his own profile pinned to Julian’s corkboard, at the shared textbooks, at the way Julian’s eyes held no judgment, only a patient, terrifying kind of love. The fear was still there, a cold knot in his stomach, but the heat of Julian’s hand against his face was stronger. He realized that the "safe" space he had been trying to protect was a cage, and the person holding the key had been his best friend all along.
With a shaky exhale, Leo dropped his backpack. The heavy thud against the linoleum floor felt like a surrender.
"I don't want to go," Leo admitted, the words tasting like honesty for the first time in his life.
Julian smiled, a slow, grounding expression that reached his eyes. He reached for his laptop on the desk and tossed a pair of tangled headphones onto the unmade bed. "Good. Because I'm not letting you. Sit down. We’re watching that documentary you like, and then we’re getting breakfast. In public. Together."
Leo sat. As Julian settled beside him, leaning their shoulders together and offering him one of the earbuds, the storm outside seemed less like a threat and more like a curtain, shielding them as they began the slow, messy process of turning a one-night stand into a life. Leo didn't leave; he stayed, finally finding the courage to be exactly who he was.
