The Texture of Truth

Weeks passed. The Resonance Chamber became less of a prison and more of a sanctuary.
June learned about the Fae world. She learned that Vesper’s "Dissonance" was a curse placed on his bloodline—a hypersensitivity to the magic of his own realm. Without an anchor, a "Harmonic," he would eventually go mad and burn the kingdom down.
She also learned that she was falling in love with him.
It was madness. He was an alien king. But he was also the man who sat on the floor and listened to her practice scales as if she were reciting poetry. He was the man who brought her strange, glowing flowers and asked her to explain the concept of "jazz."
One evening, Vesper didn't ask her to play immediately. He stood by the window, looking out at the glittering, sharp city of the Fae.
"They want me to take a consort," Vesper said tightly. "Lady Kaelith. She is... perfect. Her skin is flawless diamond. Her voice is a bell."
June felt a cold stone drop in her stomach. "She sounds lovely."
Vesper turned to her. "She is a lie. That is what you do not understand, June. Here, beauty is a weapon. It is a glamour we wear to hide our rot. Kaelith would smile at me while stabbing me in the back."
He walked over to June, pulling her up from her stool. He stood so close she could smell the scent of ozone and starlight on him.
"You have no glamour," he said. "You show me your scars. You show me your calluses. You play notes that scrape and sigh."
He cupped her face.
"You are my Harmonic, June. Do you know what that means?"
"No," she breathed.
"It means that my soul has tuned itself to yours. It means that if you leave, the silence will kill me."
He kissed her.
It wasn't a tentative first kiss. It was desperate. It was the meeting of two worlds—the cold, sharp Fae and the warm, messy human. June melted into him, wrapping her arms around his neck, feeling the solid reality of him. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel invisible. She felt like the only person in the universe.
