Chapter 6
The Sacrifice
❧
Time froze.
Literally. The dust motes floating in the shattered cabin stopped mid-air. The blood dripping from Vesper’s wound hung like rubies.
In the Mindscape, The Man stood before The Sovereign.
The Sovereign was a giant of armored brass. The Man was just... a man.
**STEP ASIDE, SHADOW,** The Sovereign commanded. **WE MUST SURVIVE.**
**At what cost?** The Man asked. **We fell because we loved them. Remember? We paused the world for them.**
**WE WERE WEAK!**
**We were kind,** The Man said. He looked down at The Child, who was hiding behind his leg. He reached down and picked the boy up. **And she was kind to us. She was alone, and she let us in. She taught us that a broken thing can still function.**
The Man turned his back on The Sovereign and looked through the eyes of the dying Vesper. He felt her fear. He felt her resignation.
**I am tired of being a God,** The Man whispered. **It is too lonely.**
**WHAT ARE YOU DOING?**
**I am paying the fare.**
The Man grabbed The Sovereign and The Child. He pulled them into his chest. He didn't merge them to restore his power. He crushed them to release it.
In the physical world, Vesper gasped.
The spear in her shoulder dissolved into rust. The wound didn't just heal; time reversed over the injury. The flesh knit together, the blood flowed back into her veins.
But it didn't stop there.
Aion poured himself into her. Not his consciousness, but his essence. He burned his divinity as fuel. He took the infinite power of a God and compressed it into a single, mortal act of healing.
**Goodbye, Vesper,** The Man’s voice echoed one last time, filled with a terrible, beautiful peace.
A shockwave of blue light exploded from *The Crawler*.
It hit the Cultists on the ridge. It didn't kill them. It aged their weapons into dust. It rusted their armor into flakes. It turned the very rock of the canyon into sand. The Sun God’s army found themselves holding handfuls of dust, stripped of their power, naked before the Wastes.
Vesper arched her back, a scream of pure life tearing from her throat as the blue veins on her skin burned white hot, then faded.
The presence in her mind—the noise, the commands, the weeping, the wisdom—vanished.
Silence rushed in.
