Chapter 3
The Silence
❧
The blade sank home.
The Wave-Lord let out a sound like escaping steam—a long, dying hiss. The creature dissolved, splashing down into the floodwaters, defeated.
Caelum didn't wait to celebrate. He dropped his sword and grabbed the Stasis Crystal with his bare hands.
"I’ve got you," he sobbed, his hands slipping on the wet surface. "I’ve got you, Lyra. Just breathe. Hold on."
He smashed his fist against the crystal. Once. Twice.
It shattered.
But there was no explosion of glass. There was just... a fading away.
The dark water of the Sanctum evaporated. The moss-covered walls receded into sterile white paint. The weight of his armor vanished, leaving him in a thin, sweat-soaked gown.
Caelum was standing—no, he was leaning heavily over a bed rail, his knuckles white, his chest heaving.
He wasn't holding a shattered crystal. He was gripping the cold metal of a hospital bed.
And below him, Lyra lay amidst a tangle of tubes and wires. She wasn't a sorceress in stasis. She was a pale, wasted girl, her skin translucent, her chest barely moving.
The frantic *beeping* that had driven his battle rhythm suddenly changed.
* Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.*
A flat, continuous tone. The sound of a horizon stretching out forever.
Caelum froze. The victory adrenaline was still pumping through his veins, demanding he pull her from the water. But there was no water. There was only the harsh hiss of the ventilator stopping, the machine falling silent.
The "White Giants"—three doctors and a nurse—stepped back from the bed. One of them, the man Caelum had struck, was rubbing his jaw, looking at Caelum not with anger, but with profound pity.
"Time of death," the doctor murmured, checking his watch. "Four-seventeen AM."
Caelum stared at his sister’s face. Her eyes were half-open, fixed on a point he couldn't see. The struggle was gone from her features. The drowning was over.
"Lyra?" Caelum whispered. He reached out, expecting his hand to pass through water, to feel the magic of the crystal.
He touched her cheek. It was warm, but cooling rapidly. It was just skin.
"I killed it," Caelum choked out, looking frantically at the doctors. "I killed the Wave-Lord. I lowered the water. She should be breathing. Why isn't she breathing?"
The nurse stepped forward gently, reaching for Caelum’s arm—the arm he had thought was holding a sword. "Caelum, please. You need to sit down. You've been hallucinating from the fever. It’s over."
"No," Caelum said, shaking his head. The reality was a physical weight, crushing him harder than the deep water ever had. "I saved her. I’m the shield. I saved her."
He looked back at Lyra. The machine wailed its single, unending note.
There was no magic here. There was no Sword-Saint. There was just a brother who had fought a war in his mind while his sister fought for air, alone, until the very end.
Caelum’s knees hit the linoleum floor. He didn't scream. He simply drowned in the dry, sterile air.
