Chapter 4
The Rot in the Roots
❧
Two weeks passed. The bond between them grew, forged in secret training sessions and stolen glances in the cafeteria. Zoya taught him how to fix his technique; Kael taught her how to laugh again. But the shadow of the tournament loomed.
Zoya had been investigating Rian, the student who—in the original timeline—had been blamed for poisoning Kael’s Qi. Rian was a jealous rival from the Fire Hall.
Three days before the tournament, Zoya made her move. She waited until nightfall and broke into Rian’s dormitory, intending to find the poison and expose him.
The room was dark. Zoya crept toward the bed, a paralysis talisman in her hand.
"Rian," she whispered. "Wake up."
He didn't move.
Zoya pulled the covers back.
Rian was there. But he wasn't sleeping. His skin was gray, his eyes open and glassy. He had been dead for days, his body preserved by a stasis rune.
Zoya recoiled, her heart hammering.
"He's dead?" she whispered. "But... he was the assassin."
She searched the body frantically. In Rian's stiff hand, clutched tight, was a jade token. Zoya pried it loose.
It wasn't a student's token. It was carved from black bone, pulsating with a sickly green light. It bore the insignia of a withered lotus.
Zoya’s blood ran cold. She knew this sigil.
Elder Shen.
The Head of the Discipline Hall. The man responsible for organizing the tournament.
In her past life, Elder Shen had been a minor figure, a benevolent old man who wept at Kael’s funeral. But now, Zoya saw the truth. Shen hadn't just allowed Kael to die; he had orchestrated it. Rian was just a patsy, murdered to tie up loose ends.
"The timeline didn't change," Zoya realized, clutching the bone token. "I just didn't see the strings last time."
A floorboard creaked in the hallway.
Zoya dove out the window just as the door burst open. She scrambled up the roof tiles, disappearing into the night.
The threat wasn't a jealous student. It was one of the most powerful masters in the sect. And he had rigged the tournament not just to kill Kael, but to harvest his lightning Qi for some dark ritual.
She had to tell Kael.
But when she reached his quarters, they were guarded by Elder Shen’s personal enforcers. Kael was in "seclusion" before the match.
She couldn't reach him. The trap was already set.
