Chapter 4
The Midpoint Twist
❧
A month passed. The herbs were no longer enough.
Xue sat in the center of the cave, her brow furrowed. The physical wounds were gone, but her aura was unstable. It flickered like a dying candle.
"It is not working," she said, frustration sharpening her voice.
Fan stopped stirring the soup. "Do you need more grass? I can go to the upper fields tonight."
"Grass is useless for the soul!" Xue snapped. She stood up, pacing the small confines of the cave. Her frustration radiated outward, cracking the stone stalactites.
She stopped and looked at Fan. He flinched, but didn't retreat.
She realized then that there was only one way. The cruel way. The only way.
She softened her expression. She walked over to Fan and sat beside him. She took his rough, calloused hand in hers.
"Fan," she said softly. "The injury I suffered... it was not from a beast. It was from the Heavens. I failed my Tribulation."
Fan nodded, listening intently. "The lightning?"
"Yes. The Heavenly Lightning Curse is still inside me. It is eating my foundation. Herbs can repair the flesh, but they cannot extract the curse. As long as it remains, I cannot cultivate. I will slowly wither until I am... mortal."
She said the word like a slur.
"I cannot let that happen," Fan said fiercely. "You belong in the sky."
"There is a way," Xue said. She squeezed his hand. "A Karmic Transfer. The curse seeks a vessel. If someone were to... invite it in. To take the burden from me."
Fan went still. "Take the curse?"
"It requires a willing soul," Xue said. "Someone pure of heart. Someone who loves me."
She looked deep into his eyes. She saw the adoration there, naked and pathetic. She weaponized it.
"If you do this for me, Fan... I will be restored. And once I have my power back, I will have the strength to save you. I will scour the world for the Elixir of Rebirth. I will heal you, and I will take you with me to the Celestial Peak. We will never be apart."
Fan looked at her beautiful, desperate face. He imagined standing beside her on a cloud, looking down at the mud he had shoveled his whole life.
He didn't ask what the curse would do to him. He didn't want to know. He only wanted to be the hero.
"I'll do it," Fan said.
Xue smiled. It was a radiant, terrifying thing. "My Dao Protector."
