Chapter 3
Fire and Ice
❧
The crisis came three days later.
Chloe was in the library, trying to decipher the ancient texts to find a way home, when the palace shook. A low, agonizing groan echoed through the jade corridors.
It sounded like an animal dying.
Chloe dropped the scroll. Her nursing instincts overrode her annoyance. She ran.
She found Han in the central courtyard. The temperature had dropped fifty degrees. Frost was creeping up the pillars, cracking the stone.
Han was on his knees. His skin was translucent, blue veins bulging against the white. His eyes were rolled back, glowing with terrifying, unstable energy.
"Qi deviation," Chloe whispered, recognizing the symptoms from the manuals she had skimmed. His Yang energy—the fire of the sun—was burning him alive from the inside, while his external shell froze to contain it.
She ran to him. "Han! Breathe!"
He lashed out, a wave of force knocking her back. "Get... away!" he gasped. "I will... consume you."
"You're going into cardiac arrest, or the magical equivalent," Chloe snapped, scrambling back up. "I'm the coolant, right? Use me!"
She grabbed his shoulders.
The contact was agonizing. It felt like grabbing a live wire wrapped in dry ice.
Han roared, his hands gripping her waist instinctively. "Too much... fire..."
"Let it go," Chloe commanded, pulling him toward the Spirit-Binding Spring. "We need to get you in the water."
She dragged him, half-carrying the massive immortal, until they crashed into the pool.
The water hissed as Han’s feverish skin hit it.
"It's not enough," Han wheezed. "The connection... must be direct."
Chloe looked at him. He was dying. The arrogance was gone, stripped away by pain, leaving a terrified man who didn't want to explode.
"Fine," Chloe said.
She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled his chest flush against hers. Skin to skin. Yin meeting Yang.
The sensation was electric. A circuit closed.
Han’s burning energy flooded into her, but instead of hurting, her cold, spirit-body absorbed it. She acted as a filter, cooling the fire and returning it to him as a soothing stream.
Han shuddered. His head dropped onto her shoulder. His breathing slowed.
For a long time, there was only the sound of water and their synchronized breathing.
Han pulled back slightly. His face was inches from hers. His eyes were clear, the blue ice melted into something darker.
He looked at her mouth.
Chloe’s heart hammered. "Better?"
Han didn't answer. He raised a hand, tracing the line of her jaw. His thumb brushed her lower lip. The touch was hesitant, full of wonder.
"You are... warm," he whispered.
"I'm alive," Chloe whispered back. "More or less."
A low hum began to vibrate in the air. A dissonance.
Han froze. He pulled his hand away as if burned.
"The Vow," he choked out. "I cannot... desire."
He scrambled backward, putting the width of the pool between them. He looked at her with wide, panicked eyes.
"Get out," he ordered, though his voice lacked its usual bite. "Get out of my sight."
Chloe climbed out of the pool, dripping wet. She looked back at him. He was hugging himself, shivering—not from cold, but from fear.
"You're welcome," she said softly, and left him to his silence.
